The City of Salinas is currently accepting applications for the temporary position of Park Maintenance Aide. Temporary employees may not exceed a maximum of 25 work hours per week and 1,000 work hours per fiscal year (fiscal year runs from July 1-June 30).

DEFINITION
This position will be assigned to perform basic park labor duties at a variety of City parks or recreation facilities, including the Salinas Municipal Stadium.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Supervision is provided by the assigned Park Maintenance Crew Supervisor. Experienced members of the Park Maintenance Worker class may be required to provide training and technical supervision.Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
* Litter removal, restroom cleaning, and athletic field preparation.
* Irrigation, pruning, painting, graffiti removal, general landscape maintenance and repairs and planting of materials.
* Operation of small power equipment.
* Safe work practices.
Knowledge of:
* Correct and effective use of landscape maintenance tools, equipment and materials.
* Safe work practices.
Ability to:
* Perform heavy manual labor for periods up to eight (8) hours.
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to high school/GED completion and experience in the field of landscape maintenance or other related labor position which utilized small power tools is preferred.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
Physical mobility and stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time, and to walk over uneven surfaces. Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and reach overhead. No severe allergic reactions to dust or pollen. Physical strength to lift up to 80 pounds. Manual dexterity sufficient to use hand and power tools. Hearing and speaking ability sufficient to converse in English over the telephone and in person, two-way radio and in person often over the noise of machinery and traffic, to detect and describe noises in machinery or to hear running water. Vision sufficient to read fine printed materials on labels, manuals, maps, diagrams, to work with color-coded wires with no color deficiencies, and to drive. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Perform heavy manual labor for periods up to but not limited to 8 hours per day. Work outdoors under adverse conditions in heat, wind, cold and rain. Work in and around potentially hazardous substances, including pesticides, herbicides and motor fuel.
