Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Playground Supervisor, the incumbent assists in conducting and leading ALL activities. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

* Accepts playground site assignments;

* Reports directly to Playground Leader;

* Acts as a role model to participants in the program

* Attends seasonal Employee Safety training;

* Attends in-service Training Orientation and all weekly staff meetings;

* Assists in planning, leading, executing and evaluating daily recreational activities such as games, crafts, recreational sports, special events, special scheduled rotating programs, tournaments, story hours, field trips and family fun carnivals and special events for the community;

* Meets with Playground Leader to plan daily activities and accept assigned responsibilities in leading the activities;

* Is accountable for recording attendance in each assigned activity;

* Helps with registration of participants in the program and maintaining and updating the registrations;

* Is responsible for maintaining discipline among playground program participants;

* Is responsible for equipment and supplies; ensure they are used properly and maintained;

* Assists with the Fort Wayne Community School Free lunch Program held on your playground site and comply with all the rules and regulations given by this program.

* Assists co-workers in planning, preparing and executing arts/crafts, sports, and special activities and willing to jump in and work wherever needed;

* Promotes program with distribution of flyers in surrounding neighborhoods and work with playground site volunteers, outreach programs and neighborhood volunteers;

* Complies with dress code for the Summer Playground program; Wears playground staff T-shirt (provided), gym shoes/closed toe shoes and appropriate length shorts;

* Submits time card to Playground Leader;

* Checks the park and surrounding areas, pick up trash, sticks, etc. and reports irregularities and abnormal conditions on the playground/parks;

* Performs duties in accordance with the City's safety rules and operating regulations and practices;

* Reports all playground participant problems to Playground Leader;

* Communicate in a professional manner with upper management, supervisor, co-workers, participants, parents, volunteers, and patrons of the park;

* Availability to work evening carnivals, extended hours or weekends as needed;

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. Management will work with the incumbent, as needed, to ensure performance expectations are clearly communicated and performance goals are achieved.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent does not have any supervisory responsibility. Incumbent will be responsible for supervising the participation of children in organized activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

* At least 18 years of age;

* Minimum of High School Diploma or GED equivalent;

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

* Must have transportation available at all times;

* Must have good leadership, organizational and communication skills

* Enjoy working with children of all ages;

* Must be of impeccable moral and ethical character;

* Ability to work all 45 days (and some evenings and weekends for special events) - except for Juneteenth and Independence Day, regular scheduled Holidays.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS - Required for Continued Employment

* Valid Indiana Driver's License if a City vehicle is used.

* Certified in First Aid and CPR by the American Heart Association within two weeks of employment (provided by the City's Risk Management Department).
