SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general direction, the Park Ranger Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the operations and visitor engagement within City parks and recreational facilities. This role is responsible for supervising Park Rangers, ensuring visitor safety, promoting environmental education, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere and is responsible for the day-to-day operation and supervision of employees within the assigned unit. The incumbent collaborates with internal departments and external partners to enhance park experiences and services.

Distinguishing Characteristics: The Park Ranger Supervisor is distinguished from the Park Ranger in that a Park Ranger Supervisor is the first line supervisor of the assigned unit. Positions at this level are distinguished by the level of responsibility assumed and the level of independence expected.

Supervision Received and Exercised: Work may be reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance

with departmental goals, plans and policies; autonomy is granted at the functional area level; work is subject

to departmental policies and accepted professional standards. Work activities are covered by

organization guidelines and directives permitting flexibility in selecting methods, procedures, work priorities,

and the planning and coordination of programs or projects to achieve desired outcomes. This position

exercises supervision, guidance, and oversight to other positions.

Essential Functions

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Plan, prioritize, assign, and supervise the work of Park Rangers responsible for park operations and visitor engagement.

Train and mentor staff in outdoor education, interpretive programs, first aid, safety standards, and departmental policies and procedures.

Evaluate staff performance, provide feedback, and implement improvement plans as necessary.

Participate in the recruitment, selection, motivation, and evaluation of Park Ranger staff.

Work with employees to correct deficiencies and implement disciplinary procedures as needed.

Patrol Park areas to promote an orderly and friendly atmosphere among visitors and resolve issues.

Identify safety hazards within the parks and develop plans to mitigate risks.

Train staff in safety procedures and implement interventions to enhance visitor and staff safety.

Issue warnings and citations for non-compliance with park regulations and City ordinances.

Coordinate with law enforcement agencies as needed to address security concerns and ensure compliance. Communicate safety plans and updates to internal stakeholders and the public as necessary.

Plan and coordinate special events and community activities with a focus on safety and visitor experience.

Collaborate with staff to implement safety protocols and emergency response plans for events.

Communicate with internal departments and external partners to ensure smooth and safe execution of events.

Interpret natural and historical features of park areas to visitors, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the environment.

Respond to public inquiries, complaints, and service requests, providing courteous and effective solutions.

Offer resources and outreach to park visitors, including assistance to homeless individuals.

Develop and distribute educational materials and information about park programs and events.

Assist in developing policies, handbooks, and training guidelines for Park Rangers and park operations.

Provide technical training related to laws, regulations, and processes relevant to park administration.

Prepare written and oral reports as needed, including daily patrol logs, incident, injury, vehicle accident, general accident reports, safety assessments, maintenance observation reports, or other required reports as necessary.

Participate in the preparation and administration of the park operations budget; submit budget recommendations and monitor expenditures.

Ensures a safe environment is maintained at respective City facilities and open space areas.

Report and address incidents of vandalism and graffiti.

Work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and nights, on a rotating schedule.

Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

Park operations, safety standards, and relevant laws and regulations applicable to park security and safety.

Principles, theories, and practices of public parks and recreation program planning, project planning, organization, and administration.

Principles and practices of Recreation.

First aid and CPR methods and techniques.

Park security and basic first aid methods, practices, procedures and ability to apply such knowledge to specific situations.

Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.

Proficiency in using technology and software for communication and reporting.

Ability to:

Understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.

Reason logically and make sound decisions under adverse conditions.

Obtain information through questioning and observation. Work in a team based environment to achieve common goals.

Work cooperatively with other departments, City officials, and outside agencies.

Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.

Supervise, organize, and review the work of lower level staff.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Meet physical requirements to safely and effectively perform assigned duties.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Science, Public Administration, or a related field. Four years of experience in park management, recreation programming, or a related field, including one year of administrative or supervisory experience in law enforcement, public safety, security or recreation.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess a valid driver's license.

CPR/AED and First Aid Certification required.
