JOB OVERVIEW: The purpose of this position is to perform kennel custodial and assigned animal care tasks. The work is performed under the supervision of the Kennel Supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Works as a team member with other kennel staff to ensure the daily operations of the shelter are performed in accordance with standard operating procedures.
* Cleans and disinfects animal cages. Washes feeding and watering containers. Feeds and waters animals.
* Empties trash containers and washes windows.
* Sweeps and mops floors.
* Monitors animal health and reports sick animals to the veterinary technicians.
* Inventories and requests kennel supplies. Stocks supplies.
* Assist the public in selecting suitable adoptable animals. Counsel potential adopters.
* Washes dishes and laundry.
* Dog and cat enrichment as needed.
* Cleans and loads incinerator. Loads, unloads and cleans freezer.
* Empty traps.
* Exposure to humane euthanasia and prepares rabies specimens for testing.
* Staff off-site adoption and special events. Conducts various public education programs.
REQUIREMENTS:
* General/technical high school diploma or GED equivalent required.
* Prior responsible work experience, preferably with animals.
* An understanding of animal diseases and modes of transmission is helpful. An ability to identify and evaluate animal breeds, characteristics, behavior and temperament is helpful.
* Must have basic computer skills.
* Must be able to work a flexible schedule as needed including holidays and weekends.
* At times mandatory overtime may be required.
* Must be able to tolerate loud noise, strong odors, and properly use various harsh chemicals.
* Must be able to life heavy objects, some in excess of 100 lbs.
* Must be able to handle a variety of animal specifics, relate well with the public, deal effectively with euthanasia and deceased animals.
* This is a part-time position with approximately 24 hours per week. Estimated time would be three days per week, working approximately 8:00 am to 6:30pm. Hours may be adjusted as needed.
