REPORTS TO:Lower School DirectorFLSA JOB CLASSIFICATION:Non-Exempt, 10 Month Position, Hourly, Part-TimeJOB PURPOSE:Greensboro Day School seeks an experienced literacy specialist for a part-time (20 hours per week) Junior Kindergarten-1st Grade Literacy Specialist to begin on January 6, 2025.The Part-Time Junior Kindergarten-1st Grade Literacy Specialist collaborates and consults with faculty, administration, and Learning Support colleagues in supporting students in Junior Kindergarten through 1st Grade who need enrichment or remediation in literacy skills. The Part-Time Junior Kindergarten-1st Grade Literacy Specialist serves as a liaison between classroom teachers and families and can help families connect with community resources. They understand the range of learning differences students exhibit, and they remain current on brain research and associated effective teaching and learning strategies. The Part-Time Junior Kindergarten-1st Grade Literacy Specialist also develops, organizes, promotes, and carries out both proactive and responsive professional development, parent education, and community events in the area of learning support with an emphasis on literacy.This is a part-time (20 hours/week), 10-month, on-campus position, five days per week, Monday through Friday, and requires occasional evening and weekend work.The Part-Time Junior Kindergarten-1st Grade Literacy Specialist models the GDS Community Cornerstones of Respect, Kindness, Integrity, and Responsibility.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures appropriate accommodations and modifications are made for the growth and development of students in accordance with the Student Accommodations policy in the GDS Family Handbook
- Works one-on-one, in pairs, or in small groups with students needing support in reading and writing skills based on information from teachers or testing
- Visits classrooms to work with small groups for remediation or enrichment as necessary
- Observes students in the classroom setting in order to assess student needs
- In collaboration with the classroom teachers, develops and implements appropriate support for students that may include specific curriculum, charts, forms, or other aids to help assigned students learn classroom material addressing learning strategies, study skills, developmental issues, and executive function systems
- Plans and executes lessons, using varied methods of instruction and assessment, that are in accordance with the School's mission, Statement of Community, educational philosophy, and departmental curriculum and competencies
- Provides a safe, nurturing, caring educational environment in which every student sees the literacy specialist as an ally and accessible advisor in the student's quest to succeed
- In collaboration with the classroom teachers, communicates in a timely manner with parents to inform them of progress and/or challenges in the classroom and in the school more generally
- Attends conferences with parents and/or teachers as requested
- Stays abreast of current brain, learning differences, and pedagogical research
- Participates as a member of the Student Support Team
- Participates in the Professional Growth and Development Program focusing on Planning and Preparation, Instruction, Classroom Environment, and Professional Responsibilities (Danielson Framework) as outlined in the Employee Handbook where applicable
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In conjunction with other members of the Learning Support Department, plans, organizes, and leads various professional development experiences for faculty and parent education programs
- Participates in committees as necessary (i.e. Grade Level Teams, etc.)
- Shares in the day-to-day life of the school community, which includes serving as an advisor, organizing clubs, attending assemblies, participating in committees as necessary, and fulfilling assigned duties (such as lunch supervision, carpool, and bus duty)
- Is active and present as a GDS community member by participating in school functions and students' extracurricular life (such as admission events, attending arts and athletics events, and planning and/or serving as a chaperone on day and/or overnight field trips)
- Serves as a role model to faculty through the active participation and leadership opportunities in professional organizations; reads professional publications and maintains personal networks
- Attends scheduled meetings (whole school, division, department, grade, etc.) when possible
- Assists with other projects and performs other duties as assigned by the Division Director and/or the Associate Head of School for People & Program

Position Requirements
- Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred
- Reading specialist certification and/or experience in the role
- Teaching experience in independent schools desired
- Understanding of child development and literacy skill development for students ages 4-6
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public presentation skills
- The ability to define problems, gather and analyze data, establish facts, and draw conclusions

WORKING CONDITIONS:Daily work requires supervising students both indoors and outdoors. Faculty are required to participate in regular safety drills, learn CPR, learn how to apply a tourniquet, provide basic first aid, administer epi-pens when needed, and be able to support other student-specific health-related needs. Some weekend, evening, or early morning work may be required from time to time.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The position may require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, standing to teach, and working on a computer. They must be able to move quickly and frequently from standing to sitting with ease and lift up to 50 pounds. The position must also be able to traverse the classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child. The position must be able to provide adequate supervision indoors and outdoors, and they must be able to ensure the safety of students during drills and emergencies that may arise from time to time. This position has frequent exposure to loud sounds and high noise levels on a weekly basis.DIRECT REPORTS:There are no direct reports for the Part-Time Junior Kindergarten-1st Grade Literacy Specialist position.
