CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Lehman College, of The City University of New York, ranks among the top five institutions in the nation for fostering social mobility. A four-year Hispanic-Serving Institution in the Bronx, Lehman offers bachelor's, master's, and advanced degrees and certificate programs in the Liberal Arts, sciences, and professions. The College's community-driven mission and notable academic programs attract a diverse, international enrollment of over 15,000 students who take courses on its 37-acre, tree-lined campus and online degree programs. Many thousands more community members benefit yearly from its active cultural, educational, health, and economic outreach programs and services.
Lehman College is a commuter college with approximately 99% of its students categorized as commuter students. Although there are varying definitions of commuter students, Lehman College commuter students can be defined as someone who does not reside in any CUNY campus sponsored housing and are often working part-time or full-time jobs. Commuter student needs differ significantly from residential students. On top of academic and extracurricular activities, commuter students face the daily challenge of commuting to and from campus, which impacts their ability to be connected to the campus in significant ways. The COVID-19 pandemic added an additional challenge for commuter students, not having many opportunities to be in-person on campus, which left many feeling isolated and disconnected. Now, with about 70% of Lehman College students taking either in-person or hybrid courses which require them to be on campus, the ability to integrate or involve commuter students fully into the campus environment is important to the success and graduation of those students.
As a result, the Commuter Assistance Mentorship Program (CAMP), within the Division of Student Affairs was designed to enhance the experience of first-year and transfer commuter students. CAMP matches upper-class commuters called Commuter Assistants (CAs) with first-year commuter students or transfer commuter students to assist with their transition to college, just like Resident Assistants (RAs) help resident students transition to college life. CAs serve as mentors as well as a resource. CAMP Mentors are connected to a LEH250 class in which they are paired with a faculty member to provide a more student-centric perspective on navigating campus processes.
The Division of Student Affairs assists students with social, personal, and emotional development and encourages intellectual and ethical growth through programs, initiatives, clubs, leadership activities, and various community events. The Division has five subgroups: 1) Student Transitions and Retention 2) Student Health, Wellness, and Inclusion 3) Leadership and Engagement 4) Career Exploration and Professional Development 5) Varsity Athletics, Intramurals, and the APEX, where the 12 departments within the division reside.
