PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT Location: Hilo, Hawaii

Base Hourly Rate: $35.92 to $39.51 depending on experience
In this role, you will:
- Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens.
- Provide dictation of concise and accurate gross description, including all relevant measurements and orientation information, gross details of the lesion(s), associated findings, staging elements, and cassette key
- Assist pathologist with Intraoperative Procedures - preparation and staining of frozen section slides of suitable quality in a timely fashion; preparation and staining of air-dried and methanol fixed touch preps and/or smears of suitable quality.
- Assist with Cytology FNA smear preparation or needle biopsy.
- Prepare bone marrow aspirate smears.
- Maintain all instruments in clean and working order - record temperature and instrument preventive maintenance records.
- Prepare reagents and stains to meet departmental quality standards. Properly label, store and dispose of reagents/stains.
- Participate in examinations to test proficiency.
- Neutralize and dispose waste formalin and biohazard tissue. .
- Perform and documents scheduled preventative maintenance
- Recognize when troubleshooting is needed and initiate a review and plan for resolution.
- Work in a fast-paced laboratory environment with biological and chemical hazards
- Champion safety, compliance, and quality control
All you need is:Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, training and/or experience (laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution) that meet the minimum CLIA-88 requirements.
- Current ASCP certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (Affiliate or Fellow status in the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants) strongly preferred, but not required.
- Previous experience in a pathology laboratory of at least 3 years preferred.
- Ability to correctly use anatomic/medical terminology to dictate gross dissections.
- Computer skills, literate with working knowledge of laboratory information systems.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills.
- Excellent English communication (verbal and written) skills.
- Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computers, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes, and audible alarms
