Under the direct supervision of the Head Nurse/chare Nurse will provide skillful, quality care for all patients seen in the Ambulatory Care department.Functional Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Reports directly to the Head Nurse/Designee.
  • Perform or assist with all activities within the scope of a Nurse Aide and/or Medical/surgical Technician job Description.
  • Inform patients on proper preparation for various medical testing.
  • Prepare patient for examination and assist medical provider during examination by providing necessary supplies/equipment.
  • Prepare examining room for examination including cleaning of instruments and equipment.
  • Instruct patients on how to obtain specimens for laboratory testing and perform basic specimen screening/testing through dipstick and hemocult.
  • Print labels and prepare collected specimens for pick-up and print lab results upon request from MD/Nurse.
  • Checks vital signs, weight, height, abdominal growth and head circumference as indicated, and document findings on medical record.
  • Performs vision and hearing testing, simple urinalysis and urine pregnancy testing.
  • Performs simple first aid, such as simple dry dressing changes.
  • Performs screening for blood glucose levels.
  • Operate electrocardiograph equipment to record wave tracing of electrical currents of the heart and document on medical record.
  • Conduct interview of client to obtain routine personal and demographic information.
  • Administer heart saver procedures, including BCLS upon certification.
  • Report observations of patient to nursing/medical staff caring for patient to ensure professional assessment.
  • Act as a liaison between patients and Medical/Nursing staff such as answering routine inquiries in person or via telephone.
  • Participate in informing patients and their families of health care services and achieving healthful, safe living.
  • Act as a greeter and direct and escort patients to other hospital departments and/or facilities as needed.
  • Maintain complete process and file patients' charts, appropriate forms, and documents.
  • Maintain inventory of the unit's equipment stock and supplies.
  • Work effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assist in the orientation of new PCA, MST, or NA.
  • Open visits, schedule referrals, appointments through manual and/or automated systems and register patients for clinic appointment.
  • Screens for pain and tobacco use and reports and documents positive findings to Registered Nurse and the medical
  • Change diapers (when indicated).
  • Administer tepid baths (when indicated).
  • Attends ongoing mandated classes and in services as scheduled.
  • Responds to fire bells and all other clinical alarms in the area.
  • Observe child/elder abuse/maltreatment and report to Head Nurse/Designee immediately.
  • Assist with maintenance of environmental conditions conducive to comfort and safety of patients. Additionally, collects blood specimens for laboratory testing by performing veni-puncture and/or fingerstik testing.
  • Maintains cleanliness of unit.
  • Maintain cleanliness and check temperatures inside refrigerator and record daily.
  • Assist in the admission and transfer of patients.
  • Safe transport of patients via wheelchair or stretcher.
  • Performs other related duties assigned by Head Nurse/Charge nurse, including use of pulse oximeter, and other related clerical responsibilities.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Is aware of fire safety/evacuation plan.
  • Is aware of disaster plan.
  • Is aware of hazardous waste management program.
  • Participates in team building activities.
  • Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce risk of injury to patients, visitors, and staff.
In addition, for Surgery and Surgical Subspecialties Areas:
  • Assist MD in the performance of special procedures regarding fine needle aspirations, breast examinations, incision and drainage.
  • Skilled in simple dressing changes including Unna boots.
  • Cleans instruments and delivers and picks-up sterile supplies and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's Department of Education or arecognized accrediting organization; and2. Successful completion of training courses in the performance of phlebotomy and electrocardiography(EKG), or completion of a training program or programs that include the performance of phlebotomy andEKG, such as Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician training programs, a Patient Care trainingprogram, or a Medical Assistant training program; and3. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)through the American Heart Association (AHA).Special Note:In addition to meeting the qualifications above, assignment to a long-term care facility requires New YorkState Nurse's Aide certification.If you wish to apply for this position, please apply online by clicking the Apply for Job button.
