UPMC Hamot is hiring a patient care technician to join our 4 North - Transitional Support Unit.
This position is full-time, 12-hour rotating shifts. Weekend and holiday coverage required.
Transitional Support Unit (4 North) : an 11-bed transitional support unit, providing care for medical and surgical patients who are medically stable and are awaiting discharge.
Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.
Responsibilities:
Provides patient care, assists with procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
Provides feedback to the RN and reports changes in patient status.
Performs core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care) and at least four additional tasks (phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal).
Reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
Establishes effective communication with other departments and maintains professional relationships. Contributes to unit activities (responding to call lights, passing meal trays, transporting patients).
Receives feedback constructively, identifies learning needs, and seeks to improve knowledge, skills, and performance. Provides instruction to patients and families under RN direction, may apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints.
Communicates clearly with the health care team, understands cultural diversity, and supports workplace safety. Adheres to all patient care and hospital policies and procedures, including safety precautions.
Documents in the medical record according to procedures, performs work timely and productively, and completes clerical functions as needed. Suggests and supports departmental changes, assumes responsibility for assignments, and supports quality initiatives.
Achieves and maintains competency in advanced skills (phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tubes clamping and removal).
Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must have one of the following:
1 year of general healthcare experience.
6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion.
Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training with at least one clinical rotation completed.
Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class. Successful completion of basic information system training.
Microcomputer experience preferred. Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
EMT or Paramedic certification or enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
Limited access to medications, only for distribution to the nurse.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
