A primary aspect of this role includes positive relations with patients, guests, physicians, co-workers and other departments. The Health Unit Coordinator demonstrates excellent customer service. He/She upholds the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant, and commits to Extraordinary Care for Every GenerationResponsibilities:Remains flexible in cooperation with 24-hour staffing patterns and scheduling needs for provision of care in all inpatient unitsModels Covenant's Mission, Vision and Values of keeping our commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every GenerationEstablishes and maintains effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and familiesHas contact with patients, families, and multidisciplinary staff and is able to facilitate admissions, discharges, and daily care by the team according to guidelines as defined by Covenant HealthCareAttending unit conferences, required competencies, in-service programs, annual mandatory education, competencies and continuing education activities to meet the organization's expectationsEMR Clinical Support:With key responsibilities for smooth, accurate, and timely patient flow, the HUC will accept calls and record patient information from patient placement regarding admissions and transfersDischarges are to be entered immediately into the EPIC systemSupports patient care delivery by monitoring HUC worksheetsPerforms electronic chart checks every 1-2 hoursReviews orders for timely renewalMaintain daily ADT census flowInitiates, assembles, and maintains the patient chart, admission folders for patients, and thank you cardsMonitors location of chart at all timesPrepares charts at the point of patient discharge or expiration for pickup by Health Information ManagementNotifies RN when Physician is roundingUpdates assignment sheets and validates staffing with schedules, assignment sheets and shift administrator or staffing coordinatorAssists in calling in and/or calling off staff as requestedAnswers patient call lights in a timely fashion and informs appropriate caregiver of the needECC: Maintains on-call physician log, Facility Charge Calculator, review trauma and code 180 notes for completionUnit Appearance & Stocking:Assists with overall unit appearance including cleaning desk area, microwaves and refrigeratorsMonitors and assists with: maintenance of dirty utility room; checking; assists stocking isolation cartsMaintains appropriate levels of office supplies and patient education materials, orders & stocks as neededTracks & Monitors:Daily regulatory checks including refrigerator temperature checks, daily weights, restraint required documentationMonitor &/or enter charges for: sitters, blood administration, isolation, and others as assignedPromotes a constructive and positive atmosphere within the work area by demonstrating the ability to cooperate with and assist fellow health team members as well as patients and their familiesDaily references Health Unit Coordinator Role Responsibility Checklist to ensure duties are completed each shiftOther duties as assignedOther information:EDUCATION/EXPERIENCEHigh School diploma required.Completion of Medical Terminology course preferred.Graduate of a Medical Office Professional course or completion of Medical Assistant Program preferred.Health Unit Coordinator Course or commensurate experience preferred.Attending unit conferences, required competencies, in-service programs, annual mandatory education, competencies and continuing education activities to meet the organization's expectations.One year of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIESBasic computer skills.Knowledge of standard office equipment.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Demonstrated organizational skills.Ability to type 25 words per minute.Sound judgment in handling confidential or sensitive issues and material.Excellent time management, to achieve maximum productivity.Attentive to detail.WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDSAbility to maintain punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.Constant standing and walking Frequent pushing, pulling, twisting, reaching, handling, feelingFrequent talking, hearing, near vision, midrange vision, far visionFrequent depth perception, visual accommodation, color vision and field of visionOccasional lifting up to 25 lbs.Occasional sitting, lifting, carrying, climbing, balancing, stoopingOccasional kneeling, crouching and squattingNOTICE REGARDING LATEX SENSITIVITY IN APPLICANTS FOR EMPLOYMENT.It has been determined that Covenant HealthCare cannot provide a latex safe or latex free work environment at any of its facilities.
