Summary
Reports to the Manager, Summit Center. Transports patients to locations within the hospital and performs a variety of duties in support of the objectives of the Centralized Transportation Department, as well as performing other duties.

Participates as an effective member of the Centralized Transport Department by:
* Assisting with the moving, lifting and transferring of patients (including patients needing transportation to the morgue) and items for the purpose of transporting them to various locations within the Hospital and in patient care areas as needed.
* Maintaining par levels for various equipment on the patient floors.
* Transporting clean and dirty equipment to appropriate locations.
* Maintaining constant contact with an immediate response to calls, including the reporting of all delays, cancellations or remarkable events related to transport assignments.
* Communicating with other transporters as assigned or as needed to support the transportation needs of the organization.
* Observing patients during transport process and reporting to the Nurse/Tech any complaints, unusual behavior, incidents, requests, equipment/safety problems and/or concerns expressed by family members or visitors.
* Transporting and handling equipment safely and appropriately and returning to proper storage areas upon completion of transport runs; also reporting all equipment needs and/or repairs to Manager and removing any unsafe or broken equipment from operation.
* Adhering to all policies and procedures related to patient identification, infection control, confidentiality and the use of universal precautions when required.
* Greeting patients, visitors, other staff and physicians in a pleasant and courteous manner.
* Promoting the services of the departments.
* Reporting any patient/visitor concerns or complaints to the Manager.
Maintains all transportation equipment in the Centralized Transport Department by:
* Understanding, operating and restocking all oxygen equipment and supplies as needed.
* Performing cleaning of equipment as necessary and as assigned.
Performs other duties to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
* Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

* Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
* Consistently utiliz es appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
* Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
* Complies with established organization and department policies.
* Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
* The level of knowledge, skills and abilities indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma (or equivalent) or equivalent knowledge. Previous experience in patient transportation or working in a healthcare environment is preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
* Demonstrates the communication skills necessary to read, write and spell non-medical terms; also must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
* Demonstrates basic mathematical skills necessary to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
* Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to consistently interact with patients, families, visitors and staff in a courteous manner and to maintain positive working relationships.

* Requires ability to work independently and take initiative.
* Requires ability to operate portable telephones and other electronic devices used for the transport process. Also requires fine motor skills for manipulation of highly technical equipment used to meet patient care needs.

Working Conditions
* Works in a patient care environment requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, certain undesirable patient care activities and possible exposure to bio-hazards.
Physical Demands
* Demonstrates the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to remain on feet and/or walk for long periods of time, push wheelchairs, stretchers and carts, lift or pull objects of at least 50 pounds, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
