Summary:
This position is responsible for effecting the desired flow of products and services to the target market to generate profitable operations by maintaining and supervising productive underwriting processing systems. This position is responsible for participating in an underwriting training and onboarding process through mentorship from the General Manager and Underwriting Manager. This position will learn and perform underwriting/re- underwriting functions within level of authority, selecting risks that De Smet will insure. This position will evaluate new and current business to verify initial and continued acceptability and adequate rates, and ensure that Agents understand and adhere to the company underwriting philosophy and service expectations of our Members. This position will actively support and promote De Smet Farm Mutual culture and its guiding principles and support the decisions made by the management team. This position will support De Smet Farm Mutual Group agencies to align strategies for effective growth and profitability of their books of business and will collaborate with Marketing to build and train agency acumen. This position is expected to develop industry knowledge and evolving product understanding and will be viewed as a knowledgeable resource within the department.
This position will perform mono-line or multi-line in each departments applicable lines of business.
Functions:a. Evaluate moderately complex underwriting applications and policy change requests.
b. Provide consultative advice to Agents regarding risk appetite.
c. Under the guidance of a mentor, develop the competency to analyze individual accounts, portfolio experience, an begin to apply product knowledge and acquired skills to perform underwriting tasks. Tasks may include, but are not limited to reviewing change requests, evaluate audits, inspections, and renewal records to verify continued acceptability, rate adequacy, and possible coverage modifications with the level of authority. Review policyholder files and records to verify continued acceptability and rate adequacy.
d. Review risks and reports to determine appropriate action, including coverage modifications or termination.
e. Develop and maintain working relationships with Agents, staff, and Marketing and other departments.
f. Act as a resource to Agents and their staff, answering questions and discussing risks.
g. Assist Underwriting Manager with team workflow.
h. Communicate with Marketing team regarding Agent issues or concerns.
i. Develop knowledge of current industry trends and product understanding.
j. Participate in the evaluation of Agents as directed.
k. Advise Underwriting manager of issues or concerns.
l. Advise management and Agents regarding termination of unacceptable risks and accounts requiring facultative reinsurance cessions.
m. Process and manage all facultative reinsurance placements and changes.
n. Train and mentor less-experienced underwriters and Assistant Underwriters.
o. Monitor, manage, and test all programming tickets for the rating system.
p. Review, rate, code, and enter new policies, changes, and cancellations into the computer system for all lines of business.
q. Provide quoting of new or existing business as requested.
r. Communicate with agents and policyholders regarding specific rating information or other customer service-related matters.
s. Develop an understanding of policy language appropriate to the department.
t. Order inspection reports, MVRs, CLUE, and credit reports.
u. Send loss payee, mortgagee, and other policyholder letters and documents.
v. Participate with user testing/quality assurance functions as requested.
w. Assist with agency seminars, training, and visits as needed.
x. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
y. Perform the duties of the Underwriter/Manager in their absence.
Qualifications:a. High school or equivalent education required and three years; experience at the company level. Working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, and email software required.
b. Ability to learn and work effectively with all aspects of the computer system including the ability to verify correct rates through calculations and rate traces.
c. Occasional travel required.
d. Knowledge of Property and Casualty insurance policies, operations, and practices.
e. Working knowledge of insurance company operations or underwriting requirements preferred.
f. Proven ability to understand business and IT issues and communicate priorities required.
g. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to build relationships and interact professionally with individuals at all levels internally and externally.
h. Exceptional attention to detail required.
i. Ability to learn rating and procedural concepts required.
j. Effective interpersonal and communication skills, willingness, and ability to take initiative and responsibility required.
k. Ability to detect and correct errors in procedures required.
l. Ability to work flexible hours, travel to all organization offices (including in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and South Dakota) and travel to vendor work sites required.
m. Ability to work in an office environment with moderate noise level, remain in a stationary position and operate a computer a majority of the time required.
n. Ability to move throughout the office to access work materials and to move work materials weighing up to ten pounds daily required.
o. Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation required.
