Job DetailsJob LocationYMCA of Sumter - Sumter, SCPosition TypePart TimeJob ShiftAnyDescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY:The Sumter Y personal trainer assists YMCA members in finding new ways to build healthy habits through exercise. This position will work closely with members in promotion of wellness and helping individuals realize their personal best. Personal trainers are responsible for building rapport with members through providing support, encouragement, and education along with proper coaching and appropriate program design.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide safe and effective instruction.
  • Make a constant effort to understand members' definition of well-being, personal goals, cultural background, healthcare needs, diverse abilities and interests. Develop plans to meet their individual needs.
  • Monitor clients to ensure their general safety and proper equipment function; enforce all member codes of conduct, rules and policies including, but not limited to, age restrictions, dress codes, language and proper use of YMCA equipment and facilities.
  • Demonstrate correct stances, posture, alignment and technique during sessions; show safe, effective ranges of motion and exercise control.
  • Understand the prevention, detection, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, basic emergency procedures, professional responsibilities and scope of practice for personal trainers.
  • Stay up to date on health and fitness research and standards.
  • Refer clients to more qualified health or medical professionals when appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain professional boundaries with clients.
  • Help maintain a pleasant and encouraging environment.
  • Integrate the mission of the YMCA and follow the core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility into the healthy living aspect of job responsibilities.
  • Keeping accurate records of scheduled, rescheduled and cancelled appointments.
  • Attend continuing education and mandatory trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Current national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM, ISSA, ACSM) in Personal Fitness Training or previous certification and experience plus a current Fitour Personal Fitness trainer certification.
  • Sound understanding of the human movement system, proper biomechanics, fundamentals of human behavior, including barriers to success and stages of readiness for change.
  • Child Abuse Prevention, required 60-days into employment.
  • CPR, First Aid AED, prior to employment.
