Position Summary
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. A Personal Trainer follows the YMCA of the USA's and Health and Fitness guidelines. They are responsible for general oversight of the Wellness Center while on duty, offering wellness appointments to members, and creating and updating personalized programs. Personal Trainers will be able to schedule one-on-one and small group training sessions at times that they are available. They may also conduct orientations, walk the wellness center floor to assist members, or offer free appointments when they are not conducting personal training sessions. They provide support that is both educational and motivational, which promotes member wellness in accordance with policies and procedures. A Personal Trainer provides excellent customer service to our members and creates a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment.
Essential Functions
* Works closely with members who purchase personal training sessions, to create and conduct individualized training programs that are effective and safe
* May lead new fitness programs for groups that are launched in the Wellness Center, overseeing program assistants to help participants achieve targeted fitness goals
* Cultivates authentic relationships with members and program participants in support of their fitness goals
* Creates an inspiring and safe environment in which all individuals feel welcomed and respected
* Monitors the Wellness Center as members use the equipment to ensure their general safety and proper equipment function; enforces all member codes of conduct, rules and policies including, but not limited to, age restrictions, dress codes, language and proper use of YMCA equipment and facilities
* Takes professional initiative to offer information, promote personal training sessions and provide additional YMCA wellness services and programs
* Administers, tracks appointment purchases and redemption. Maintains proper records and paperwork, responds to member questions and seeks out additional information when needed
* Exercises sound judgment in relationship to member safety and injuries
* Maintains and cleans equipment according to the schedule or as requested by supervisor
* Maintains working knowledge of fitness and wellness best practices and trends to provide effective information and support to members
* Integrates the mission of the YMCA and follows the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility into the healthy living aspect of job responsibilities
* Completes all required trainings as assigned by supervisor, by scheduled due date
* If required to drive while on duty (either your own vehicle or a Y-owned vehicle), must maintain a current, valid Oregon driver's license, a DMV driving record that meets YMCA standards, and evidence of insurability throughout entire term of employment
* Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
* Must hold a current nationally recognized certification in strength and conditioning or personal training (i.e., ACE, ACSM, NASM, ISSA, NSCA) and maintain it throughout your employment with the Y
* At least 6 months of previous experience articulating and communicating effectively while instructing participants in proper execution of weight bearing and cardiovascular exercise
* Previous experience communicating, demonstrating and encouraging proper strength training guidelines
* Previous experience working with special populations, including modification of modifying exercises for effectiveness and safety
Preferred Qualifications
* Associate level degree or higher in fitness related field
* At least 1 year of previous experience in exercise program design, equipment and free-weight training principles
* At least 1 year of previous experience leading an individual/group and motivating others to achieve their health and well-being goals
* Previous experience working at a YMCA
* Conversational fluency in Spanish
