We are looking for an exceptional Phlebotomist II to join our practice!

Physicians East, PA is a multi-specialty, multi-campus group based out of Greenville, NC offering a wide range of specialties. In addition to primary care the practice offers pulmonary and critical care medicine, rheumatology, dermatology, oncology, endocrinology, cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology, gastroenterology, surgery, urology, and urgent care. Our 102 providers and over 600 employees provide services for thousands of patients in a 29-county region. Our specialists are on staff at ECU Health, a 900+ bed, level one trauma center and the primary teaching hospital for the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine (ECU-BSOM).

Location & commitments

FT/PT/Temp/PRN role based at our Greenville (other) location, Monday-Friday, 7a.m. - 6 p.m.

Overtime may be required to ensure patients are taken care, tasks are completed, and calls are returned in a timely manner.

Weekend work is rare but can occasionally be necessary.

Supervision Received: Reports to Laboratory Manager; Director of Clinical and Ancillary Services.

Supervision Exercised: None.

Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent walking, sitting, bending, and standing required for extended periods of time. Lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.

Typical Working Conditions: Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Responsibilities:

Phlebotomist II specifically:

* Performs difficult blood drawing techniques under specialized circumstances.

* Skilled at performing venipuncture using multiple types of collection devices (ex-straight and butterfly needles).

* Recognizes adverse reactions in patients (such as changes in skin temperature or fainting) and

* Initiates appropriate response

* Trains lower-level employees and student externs in phlebotomy techniques

* Helps coordinate schedules

* Assists in monitoring expendable supplies; keeps drawing areas stocked

* May perform quality control procedures for equipment (such as glucose monitors, urine machines, cbc analyzers, and other point of care equipment)

* May be trained to rotate to other Physicians East locations

* Trained to perform drug screening

* Performs other related duties as assigned

General Phlebotomist duties:

* Enter patient information into the laboratory information system (LIS), enter tests ordered by the physician into the LIS accurately and efficiently. When entering patient information and ordering tests, the phlebotomist is required to verify patient information and insurance information match EMR chart and/or encounter form.

* Perform venipuncture and arterial punctures.

* Distribute 24-hour urine collection kits and stool collection kits with proper instructions and answer questions concerning this collection from patients.

* Follow workflow as follows:

* Patient presents to lab with encounter ticket.

* Phlebotomist locates diagnostic order in EMRLink and electronically transmits order to the LIS.

* Phlebotomist enters LIS and orders lab tests on diagnostic order. When ordering tests patient and insurance information must be verified.

* Barcodes will print for each test ordered. Phlebotomist will then call patient back to drawing station by the encounter ticket.

* Phlebotomist should verify patient by having patient state their name and date of birth.

* Venipuncture is then performed, and patient will collect urine or another specimen if necessary. Phlebotomist should verify patient a second time by having patient state their name and date of birth.

* Phlebotomist signs all blood collection tubes with their initials and sends specimens to laboratory through pneumatic tube system.

* Send or transport collected specimens to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection. If transport is delayed, phlebotomist must ensure specimen has been sent for proper storage until transport is available.

* Ensure all stats are received in the main laboratory as soon as possible.

* Establish and maintain a quality assurance program for all tests performed by establishing acceptable levels of performance and ensuring these levels are maintained.

* Contacts Laboratory Manager and/or Director of Clinical and Ancillary Services when situations present regarding quality assurance.

* Resolve technical problems and ensure that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

* Ensure that patient results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.

* Ensures specimen integrity by enforcing the laboratory's procedures for collection, handling, and processing.

* Maintains, implements, adheres to, and enforces departmental operating policies and procedures to include all programs, quality control, quality assurance and safety.

* Answers questions and resolves problems pertaining to test requisitions, specimen requirements, test additions, priority changes (from routine to STAT and vice versa) and patient results utilizing the Lab information system or other data retrieval system.

* Responsible for the recording of all statistical information.

* Ensures that all specimen collections and processing are performed in compliance with appropriate clinical/laboratory guidelines.

* Stock phlebotomy stations as needed. Perform an inventory at least once a week and notify person in charge of ordering supplies when items need to be ordered.

* Keep work area neat, clean, and disinfected always. Biohazard trash needs to be kept at an acceptable level.

* Establishes and maintains effective relationships with patients and co-workers.

* Adheres to department and office policies.

* Attends compliance and safety classes as offered by Physicians East.

* Maintains yearly CPR certification and other related certifications as appropriate.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Candidate requirements: Completion of a certified phlebotomy program with at least 5 years of relevant experience performing phlebotomy/laboratory functions in a medical setting. Experience with departmental operating policies and procedures to include all programs, quality control, quality assurance and safety is preferred.
