Responsibilities:
* Interacts with all laboratory customers in a courteous and professional manner, ensuring timely responses to telephone inquiries and maintaining excellent communication standards.
* Follows proper patient identification procedures and collects blood specimens through venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick techniques; provides patients with clear instructions for specimen collection when required.
* Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and sound judgment in prioritizing tasks to meet departmental needs and accepts appropriate authority when necessary.
* Performs specimen collection at both on-site and off-site locations, ensuring safe transportation of specimens to the relevant laboratory sections in adherence to established safety protocols.
* Complies with laboratory and hospital policies, including quality control, quality assurance, safety procedures, hand hygiene, isolation precautions, and personnel regulations.
* Performs clerical duties such as entering patient demographics and test orders into the information system, ensuring accuracy in test orders, cancellations, and adjustments while verifying patient information and sample identity.
* Trains and orients new employees, students, and residents, providing guidance and support in accordance with laboratory procedures as assigned.
* Communicates any unusual or problematic incidents to technical staff, supervisors, and pathologists, and ensures proper procedures are followed, including performing arterial punctures when required and maintaining supplies.
Qualifications:
Required:
* High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred:
* Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program
* Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy
* Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
