Work Shifts SHIFT I 12:00AM-8:00AM Job Description PURPOSE OF POSITION Performs phlebotomy procedures under clinical supervision of licensed personnel and general supervision of the area Supervisor, Assistant Director, Lab Administrator and Director of Laboratories in order to provide ancillary support to laboratories in drawing blood from patient/client for testing and diagnostic procedures. AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES Outpatient Phlebotomy Inpatient Phlebotomy All patient populations, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Draws blood for laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures in all areas and for all patient populations, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, on a rotational basis in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
  • Provides instruction to patients in order to obtain test samples as required; appropriately assesses patient limitations; exhibits appropriate behaviors to patients; collects specimens.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA) at all times.
  • Identify patient's name and date of birth by scanning the inpatient ID band before venipuncture is performed.
  • Follows procedures on identification of outpatient and specimens and performs related documentation.
  • Understands and practices the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Follow HHC policy and procedures for the clinical laboratory.
  • Register patients in EPIC System, if needed order tests.
  • Maintains required records and logs; files ancillary log sheets; submits and/or records statistics daily; performs other clerical tasks in support of blood drawing activities.
  • Assists in procuring, inspecting, cleaning, and storing of related phlebotomy/laboratory equipment including venipuncture trays, carts.
  • Adheres to infection control practices including standard precautions, isolation techniques, tray decontamination, and recommended hand washing techniques; follows all other safety protocols.
  • Performs related work, such as weekly decontamination of phlebotomy trays and completing individual monthly log.
  • Assists in training new phlebotomists.
  • Answer and direct calls to appropriate department relay messages in a timely manner.
  • Addresses issues or situations that require immediate or additional attention (e.g., adverse reactions to phlebotomy) and informs the supervisor or other appropriate leadership of such situations.
  • Attends and participates in continuing education and in-service programs.
  • Participates in internal/external quality assurance, performance improvement activities and programs, departmental and team/committee meetings, and facility-wide training.
  • Adheres to dress code policy, neat and clean appearance is recommended.

Minimum Qualifications 1. Graduation from a senior high school or evidence of having passed an examination for a High School Equivalency Diploma; or, 2. Satisfactory combination and education, training and experience; and, 3. Successful completion of the prescribed training program for Phlebotomist.
