Requirements

Purpose of the Position

This position will assist with filling orders in a manufacturing environment. They help manage inventory and package goods as part of the production staff. The Picker and Packer is part of the shipping/receiving group and works in conjunction with the other members of production and outgoing QC to help pick components for made-to order systems, and pack equipment for shipment to the customer. The location of this position will be in Thorlabs' Sterling, VA facility.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Must be able to understand written work instructions, production picking lists, and shipping/receiving documents.
  • Pick inventory items according to a picking list or sales order, organize and deliver to other production and QC personnel.
  • Pack up outgoing equipment suitable for UPS/FedEX, or LTL freight shipments to customers and field service engineers.
  • Proper handling of critical and fragile optical components.
  • Complete basic assembly, and disassembly of equipment to prepare for shipment.
  • Assist Inventory control clerk with cycle counting and resolving inventory discrepancies.
  • Assist shipping/receiving clerk with receipt, and stocking incoming materials and throughout the manufacturing facility when necessary.
  • Assist shipping/receiving clerk with packaging and processing outgoing products when necessary.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment through compliance with procedures, policies, and regulations.

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools.

Qualifications

Experience:

Minimum 1 year experience in Manufacturing environment is preferable, but not necessary.

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Self-starting individual with a strong attention to detail.
  • Strong ability to work well in a fast-paced group atmosphere, as well as individually, and comply with high quality standards.
  • Ability to multi-task, and to shift from one task to another when required addressing changing production priorities.
  • Must have some proficiency working with computers and Microsoft Office.
