Certification/Licensure A valid driver's license which must be maintained while in this job. Preferred Experience Prior work experience in a high school JROTC program, the military, law enforcement, or related field experience is preferred Medical Group Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this position either with or without reasonable accommodations. Mission Essential Designation In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events. SUMMARY Under direct supervision, the Police Cadet performs tasks in various divisions of the Police Department in conjunction with a formal training matrix program designed for career advancement into the law enforcement field. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs clerical duties; keeps records, enters information into computer systems; answers the telephone and provides information and directions to the general public. Processes information and prepares reports as assigned; submits completed reports on all cases assigned; prepares a variety of correspondence, including statistical and narrative reports; researches and analyzes information. Learns to interpret and apply Metro's law enforcement policies and procedures including Police Department policy manual, and related state and federal laws. Learns standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with department personnel and other Metro personnel. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with the public using principles of good customer service. Exercises good judgment and demonstrates initiative in the performance of work. Meets the physical requirements of the position. Participates in formalized training courses and programs. Performs basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and calculation of percentages. Participates in the Ride-Along program at a minimum of once a month; to include a written report. On a continuous basis, learns and gains knowledge and understanding of the general aspects of police employee's jobs. Analyzes work papers, reports and special projects; interprets and applies the law to field situations; problem solve crime situations; and explain law to the instructors. Must adhere to all WMATA rules, regulations, policies and procedures including but not limited to the Department Orders, Rules of Conduct, directives, and direct orders given by superiors: and adheres to all applicable State and Federal laws including but not limited to the Penal, Vehicle, and Health and Safety Laws. Is responsible for knowing the Use of Force policy, Driving policy, Uniform and Grooming policy, Professional Standards policy and Ride-A-Long policy and off duty conduct policy. May be required to work holidays, evenings, weekends, shift work, or varied schedule. Important Perform related duties as assigned.
