This position is responsible for investigating crimes, collects and preserves evidence, conducts interviews, and interrogations and prepares cases for presentation in court. The incumbent for this position may request to be hired as a Police Officer, (SRO) School Resource Officer . However, this will be based on experience, qualifications and availability. Incumbents' desires for specific position will be taken into consideration, but not guaranteed. There are possibilities of being dedicated to a specific assignment within one of fourteen schools inside the City of Rocky Mount.If chosen or if volunteers for one of these special assignments, incumbent must understand that after assignment he/she would return back to regular police officer duties at any given time. JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Answers calls for services.
  • Responds appropriately to critical situations; applies proper police procedures.
  • Investigates crimes and accidents.
  • Prepares incident, accident, and arrest reports.
  • Contacts victims and conducts interviews, investigations, and interrogations in compiling criminal cases.
  • On call assignments for investigative response as designed by schedule.
  • Processes crime scenes.
  • Serves arrest warrants and criminal summons.
  • Processes prisoners; takes fingerprints and photographs.
  • Conducts follow-up investigations on case assignments. Prepares written reports of cases assigned.
  • Serves subpoenas.
  • Works traffic details.
  • Searches for suspects, witnesses, missing persons and lost property; makes arrests for criminal violations.
  • Presents evidence and testimony in court hearings of prepared cases.
  • Investigates narcotic and vice activities.
  • Writes, execute, and serve search warrants.
  • Inventories Tasers, patrol cameras, and other equipment.
  • Participates in and organizes community-oriented policing activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Have completed the School Resource Officer Training or have the ability to complete it within one year of accepting the position.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.
  • Must possess a valid or current Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.) certificate. Candidates must provide documentation of (B.L.E.T.) certificate.
  • Must submit to and be able to successfully pass background, physical, and psychological screening.
  • No felony convictions. No serious misdemeanor convictions in the last 5 years.
  • No Domestic Violence convictions.
  • No DUI, DWI convictions in the last 5 years.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Community Services Sergeant and/or The Investigative Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES: Guidelines include local, state, and federal laws; City ordinances; City administrative and personnel policies; Police Department General Orders; department policy memoranda; Police Department Rules of Conduct and Duty; and North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related law enforcement duties. Potentially life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position. SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. Success in this position contributes to the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and to the effectiveness of department operations. PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other City staff; court officials; representatives of other law enforcement agencies; crime victims; suspects, prisoners, and inmates; and members of the general public. PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate and influence persons. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting in a patrol car, at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to potentially life-threatening situations.
