Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Police Sergeant or Lieutenant. Essential Functions/Typical TasksEnforcing animal control and protection ordinances; issuing citations; impounding animals.(The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. - Receives, investigates and answers complaints concerning stray, wild or owned animals.
- Patrols, checking for animals running at large, licenses and vaccinations; sets traps for cats and dogs.
- Impounds abandoned and stray dogs and other animals.
- Issues appropriate warning notices and citations.
- Contacts owners of dogs or other animals having bitten someone, ordering appropriate confinement of such animals, prepares and submits appropriate reports.
- Rescues trapped, lost or injured animals; returns animals to owners.
- Helps euthanize animals.
- Investigates reports of animal cruelty and issues appropriate forms; testifies in court.
- Traps and relocates problem wildlife; advises public on how to deal with problem wildlife.
- Captures wild, vicious, diseased and other animals using specialized equipment, techniques and chemicals.
- Maintains inventory of and orders supplies.
- Attends community meetings and makes presentations and schools; assists citizens in obtaining food and care for pets; performs related public relation duties related to animal control.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesGeneral knowledge of the laws, ordinances, and regulations governing the control of dogs and the protection of animals; thorough knowledge of the care, control and handling of animals; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City; ability to recognize rabies symptoms and other animal diseases and thorough knowledge of the methods and procedures to be followed; ability to collect facts and prepare reports; ability to handle, lift and/or manage heavy and/or vicious animals; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. RequirementsEducation and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience as a veterinary assistant or animal related training.Special RequirementsPossession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
