Job Description SUMMARY: Reporting to the Principal Postal Clerk, the Postal Clerk receives and delivers common carrier packages and delivers in-house packages and correspondence (filled Central Stores requisitions) to all campus departments. The Postal Clerk also sorts, weighs, meters, and delivers campus mail. Additionally, the Postal Clerk may be trained to be a Passport Agent. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Unload incoming shipments from all trucks, and deliver UPS/DHL and all common carrier packages to all campus departments.
  • Collect letters to be mailed, wrap, weigh, and stamp outgoing packages ensure proper postage and handling.
  • Record registered, insured, and valuable letters, packages and express mail as required by federal regulation.
  • Help unload and drive the mail truck, as required, to ensure continuity of service.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on machines including: inserting and sealing machines, (electronic remote) meter machines, (perforated machines), automated presort machines, other presort operations, and remote accounting system electronic scales. Perform the clerical duties related to their use.
  • Serve all walk-in customers, including students, faculty, staff and contractors.
  • Perform the work involved in receiving, date-stamping, and distributing incoming letters and packages. Obtain required signatures when necessary.
  • Perform the work involved in folding, inserting, sealing, and labeling operations, including maintaining, servicing, and repairing related machines.
  • Make regular and special runs for the collection of outgoing interoffice mail. May drive, load, and/or unload the mail truck as necessary.
  • Prepare outgoing mail for delivery to a state department post office; will weigh, stamp, and deliver outgoing mail directly to the U.S. Post Office.
  • Closely adhere to collection and delivery schedules and makes necessary adjustments to expedite emergency and peak mail loads.
  • Move packages and items from the mail receiving area to the storage area as needed. Sort and place Warehouse materials or items in designated places. For arrivals that require immediate attention, contact recipient if the area where items are to be stored is unknown.
  • Provide delivery of most packages to central distribution points in the various academic and administrative buildings.
  • Mark packages with identifying information using appropriate methods. Record receiving and shipping information as required for inventory or other purposes.
  • Assist customers on the telephone and at the service counter. Ensure that all staff and customers are treated with respect and courtesy.
  • Scan tracking numbers at the time of delivery. Create labels for packages without tracking numbers. Obtain signatures at the time of delivery after scanning tracking numbers. Upload mobile devices to PC and back up deliveries daily.
  • Ensure that information flows freely across the unit.
  • Participate in meetings and planning sessions as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED:
  • Must possess a valid NJ driver's license to operate Central Receiving Vehicles.
  • Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to operate efficiently in a positive team environment and to communicate clearly and effectively.
PREFERRED:
  • Experience loading and unloading trucks.
  • Forklift experience in a warehouse setting.
  • Experience sorting mail/ packages.
*NOTE: This is a Civil Service position. As required by the State of New Jersey, in order to be certified to the position and attain permanent status in title, candidates are required to successfully serve a 4-Month Working Test Period. This position is designated as essential. The designation of essential requires employees at these 24/7 facilities to be present due to inclement weather situations. This position requires on campus work and is not a position that allows remote work. SALARY RANGE: A09: $36,741.05 - $51,126.92 *NOTE: Salaries for internal candidates are determined by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission's formula.
