About the Opportunity The Vice President of Policy will play a key leadership role within the organization as an integral member of the NYIC's Executive Leadership Team, guiding the organization's policy direction and collaborating across the team to ensure successful execution of organizational priorities. The VP will direct and oversee the NYIC's Policy department, providing mentorship, thought partnership, strategic guidance, and direction across all policy efforts. This includes developing and advocating for immigrant integration and immigrant rights policies at the federal, state, and local levels. Areas of Leadership Executive, Organizational, and Strategic Leadership: Under the supervision of the President and CEO and In partnership with the executive team, policy team, and NYIC staff, envision and define NYIC's policy goals, priorities, and operational plans. Serve as a key thought partner and collaborator on the executive leadership team. In the midst of a dynamic context and rapid political changes, the VP must provide a strong vision, identify key priorities, and make strategic decisions about which issues or areas the policy team should focus on. Ensure that efforts align with organizational priorities and are manageable within available resources. Key Qualifications Ability to envision, define, communicate, and drive a clear strategic policy vision for the organization and team Proven track record of aligning team efforts with broader organizational goals Strong decision-making skills, with the ability to manage risks while identifying opportunities Experience navigating complex, evolving landscapes and guiding teams toward long-term objectives Ability to manage organizational growth, balancing the need for adaptability with the establishment of clear, scalable systems Demonstrated alignment with NYIC's mission and values People-Centered Team Leadership and Management: Effectively manage the policy team and foster a culture of trust, mutual respect, collaboration, accountability, ownership, and mentorship while advocating for resources and strategic workload distribution. Continue to build upon and structure the team to define responsibilities and advance NYIC's mission and policy objectives. Implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure smooth workflow and thoughtful decision-making that is grounded in organizational goals. Ensure that roles on the policy team are well-defined and manageable, including balanced and equitable distribution of workloads across the policy team. Key Qualifications: Significant experience leading, developing, and managing diverse teams, including staff with varied levels of experience Ability to develop and cultivate a culture of trust, accountability, growth, and continuous improvement Strong coaching and mentorship capabilities to develop talent and foster professional growth and engagement Skilled in performance management and able to provide both positive and constructive feedback to team members Ability to assess team capacity, balance workloads, and ensure role clarity to avoid burnout High emotional intelligence to manage interpersonal dynamics, resolve conflicts, and maintain a positive work culture during times of change or stress Policy Leadership: Provide strategic leadership on federal, state, and local immigration policy, particularly in light of rapidly changing political environments. Drive the organization's response to threats - including from the federal level - and ensure that the team is effectively advocating for the rights of immigrants at the federal level. Lead and oversee policy analysis and development on issues such as detention reform, enforcement policies, and access to health care, education, and economic opportunities. Work closely with the VP of Programs and the Programs department to ensure equitable and successful implementation of our priority campaigns and other initiatives, including lobbying for additional funding and resources. Key Qualifications: Strong knowledge of federal immigration policy; current or previous experience with state and local immigration policies, especially in New York, strongly preferred Ability to advocate for policy solutions at various levels of government (federal, state, local). Experience managing campaigns, from strategy to execution Skilled in using research and data to analyze and develop policy, influence policy decisions, and build coalitions Track record of managing grant reporting and cultivating relationships with potential and existing funders interested in policy and research Coalition Building, External Representation, and Influence: Represent the organization in high-level discussions with federal, state, and local policymakers, as well as advocacy groups and coalition members. Influence and create alliances across various sectors, leveraging NYIC's position in the field to push for immigrant-friendly policies and legislation. Key Qualifications: Strong communication skills to effectively represent the organization to external stakeholders, including policymakers, funders, media, and the public, with the ability to communicate complex policy issues in accessible, persuasive terms to diverse audiences Ability to advocate and represent the organization at conferences, media events, and with government officials Skilled in building and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders, including legislators, community groups, and funders Salary, Benefits and Location The salary for this role is $140,000. The NYIC has a transparent and equitable salary structure. Starting salaries for each position are set in advance with no room for negotiation. In addition to a competitive salary, NYIC offers a generous benefit plan, unlimited vacation time, paid sick leave, pretax benefits and a comprehensive retirement plan. This role is based in New York City, and in office four days a week.
