This is highly complex and professional engineering work involving responsibility for administering and supervising the engineering program. The position involves responsibility for the design, preparation of plans and specifications, and the layout, construction and maintenance of bridges, viaducts, pavements, sidewalks, street lighting, harbors, buildings, and water system. All professional engineering work is performed without any supervision with recommendations for administrative determination subject only to the approval of the department head.Supervises the design, construction, maintenance and repair of bridges, viaducts, pavements, sidewalks, street lighting, harbors, buildings, and water system;
Reviews consultants? designs, and prepares plans, specifications and contract drawings for extensions and improvements to the water system and for repairs and construction of Division of Water buildings;
Conducts and supervises highly complex technical studies in a search for improvements to the existing systems;
Supervises the gathering of operating data and other relevant information for inclusion in periodical reports and summaries;
Makes recommendations for and assists in the development of long-range projects and programs;
Keeps well-informed on engineering trends and new developments in engineering science and techniques;
Supervises and plans the work of the department;
Performs a variety of personnel and office management activities;
Personally performs engineering activities of a wide variety and scope requiring a high degree of administration and professional engineering judgement;

Applicants must have continuous and permanent status as an Associate Engineer in any city department for at least one year.

Applicants must possess a Professional Engineers License issued by the State of New York and must be presented at time of filing application.
In addition, applicants must have four years of full-time engineering experience.
Approved Areas of Engineering Experience
Design, construction, investigation, inspection, analysis, development, maintenance or operation of engineering programs or projects in areas of:
1.) civil engineering
2.) sewers, water mains, streets
3.) related structures/are
Special Requirement
Applicants must possess a Professional Engineers License issued by the State of New York, which must be presented at time of filing application, and maintained during employment.
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as it relates to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of public work projects;
Thorough knowledge of structural engineering as it relates to the design and construction of pump stations, structures, pavements, water lines and various other additions and improvements to city owned systems;
Ability to design and construct additions and improvements to public work projects;
Ability to prepare and analyze engineering records and reports;
Ability to express and evaluate engineering concepts and decisions in drawings, design, written specifications;
Demonstrated ability to understand and carry out administrative directions;
Must possess a high degree of accuracy; good professional judgment; initiative; resourcefulness; tact; courtesy; good address; integrity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
