Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY: The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is responsible for providing services in a manner that demonstrates respect for the patient's dignity and meets the needs of the sexual assault victim by providing immediate, compassionate and comprehensive evaluation.
- Perform and document sexual assault medical forensic interviews/exams accurately and timely
- Perform a complete medical forensic evaluation to include:
- Head-to-toe medical assessment for trauma, detailed genital/anal examination
- Forensic specimen collection and supportive documentation
- Photo documentation of bodily and genital-anal injuries with competent documentation
- Assess for mandatory reporting status and report when appropriate
- Maintain chain of custody and adhere to evidence guidelines
- Ensure patient/medical record confidentiality at all times (HIPPA)
- Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care
- Administer prophylactic medications and emergency contraception based on physicians' orders
- Coordinate referrals for appropriate follow-up care as needed
- Respond to subpoenas for exams performed and testify as fact witness as requested
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
- Maintains current Utah RN license.
- Compact licenses accepted.
EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and Certification within 7 days of hire
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Training within 180 days of hire.
EXPERIENCE/ JOB KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Minimum of one-year acute nursing experience required.
Maintenance of SANE credentials:
- Successful completion of recommended clinical components to minimally include:
- Conducting at least 3 normal pelvic exams
- Shadowing an experienced SANE for at least 2 exams and being shadowed by an experience SANE for at least 2 exams
- Recommended minimum of five adult exams performed within 12-month period, with completion of continued education, case studies, literature review, and chart reviews
- Attend minimum of 80 percent of all staff meetings and/or participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings
- Ability to work flexible hours and work a rotating schedule. The SANE will participate in the on-call rotation, providing a minimum of 120 hours per month. On-call hours will include a rotation of nights, weekends, and holidays in order to assure that a SANE is available to provide patient care at Cache Valley Hospital at all times.
