DescriptionThe Processing Archivist Librarian is a one-year temporary appointment (June 2025 - May 2026) to provide administrative project work for records management and the College Archives. This is a full-time position with benefits.ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:The Processing Archivist Librarian shares responsibility for archival and records processing to support the work of the faculty, staff, and students of Luther College. This includes the following:
- Process archival collections, rehouse material, and write descriptive finding aids using nationally- accepted archival standards and best practices.
- Review and update existing collections processing guidelines in collaboration with the College Archivist Librarian.
- Track and report processing-related statistics throughout the year.
- Participate in the management and staffing of public service points in Preus Library on select Saturdays.
- Provide occasional guidance to researchers in a welcoming environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with the supervision and training of archival student workers.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS: Education:
- Master's degree in library and information science with a concentration or certification in archives from an ALA-accredited program or a recognized international equivalent.
Experience:
- Experience in archival processing (appraisal, arrangement and description).
- Demonstrated knowledge of archival arrangement and description practices and concepts.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, or recent coursework in, preservation needs of multi-format archival collections.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, or recent coursework in metadata standards, particularly Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), Encoded Archival Description (EAD), and MARC.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, or recent coursework in, current archival practice and trends
Bonus experience:
- Experience cataloging and rehousing artifacts and memorabilia.
- Experience assessing collection preservation needs and performing basic conservation tasks.
- Proficiency in Danish and/or Norwegian.
- Demonstrated experience describing collections and creating finding aids.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting handwritten cursive.
- Experience or familiarity with Archon, ArchivesSpace, or similar content management systems.
Skills:
- Highly organized and collaborative.
- Ability to work either collaboratively or independently.
- Skilled at written communication with excellent attention to detail.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Lifting and moving of books, book carts, and other library materials.
- Some time daily sitting at a computer workstation.
- Works inside a smoke-free, air-conditioned building all day.
