If you have a passion for social justice and would like to take on the role of assisting and supporting the implementation of programs to serve underrepresented communities in the field of librarianship, this might be the job for you. The Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS) of the American Library Association uses a social justice model to address and develop library services in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion; literacy; and outreach services. The Program Coordinator, Community Engagement has three primary areas of focus:

  • Support the activities and initiatives of ALA roundtables: Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) A member group that provides a forum for the exchange of information on library materials and resources in English and other languages and promotes service for all ethnolinguistic and multicultural communities in general.; Corretta Scott King Book Awards Round table (CSKART). The Coretta Scott King Book Awards Rounds Table honors the legacy of Mrs. Coretta Scott King by promoting distinguished literature by African American authors and illustrators.
  • Coordinate (in partnership with the ODLOS Director) Equity, Diversity, Inclusion continuing education opportunities with member groups; to include but not limited to planning, scheduling and promoting. Support with the implementation of curated training sessions for library staff and partners around EDI strategy and initiatives.
  • Coordinate communication efforts for the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services; includes management of our website, social media, press releases and inquiries, member engagement software (ALA Connect), toolkits and marketing materials, mailing lists, ODLOS newsletter.
  • This is a regular full-time position based in our Chicago office. ALA staff are currently working on a flexible hybrid schedule.Please note that although we have a generous telecommuting policy for our employees, we do not have any truly remote positions in states outside of our workplace sites. ALA currently requires that employees be fully vaccinated as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Proof of vaccination will be required on or before start date. All offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check and proof of your eligibility to work in the United States. Starting salary range negotiable from the low-40s, based on relevant experience. Training, Experience, and Education Requirements: This position requires working closely with ALA members, which requires strong proven customer service orientation and expertise as well as task management skills.The ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines is critical. Bachelor's degree in communications or related field preferred or equivalent work experience in writing and communications that includes demonstrated content creation experience. Three years of experience in an association, educational, membership or similar organization is also preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience with technology, particularly Drupal, WordPress (or similar), social media tools, and online communication platforms (Informz or Mailchimp). Minimum of 3 years of basic project management Ideal candidates will also have past experience working in communications production and development and experience and/or interest in social justice and working with diverse communities.
