PRIMARY FUNCTIONS This is general maintenance and repair work of an often-complex nature in several trades.Work consists of performing a variety of skilled tasks involving the boarding up of buildings and cleaning of vacant lots. Work involves the application of limited trade skills in several trades. Assignments are received in the form of oral and written orders, or employees may discover defects and proceed on their own initiative to rectify issues. Work is usually performed independently, but is subject to supervision while in progress or upon completion. Hours of work are typically Mon-Fri, 8AM-4PM.TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs grounds maintenance work such as trash, debris, snow removal, and maintaining outdoor spaces.
  • Performs general maintenance and repair tasks across multiple trades, including plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and painting.
  • Follows oral and written instructions to identify and address defects or maintenance needs promptly.
  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment necessary for maintenance and repair work.
  • Prepares accurate daily reports detailing completed tasks, maintenance needs, and activities.
  • Boards up buildings and secure vacant or blighted properties to maintain safety and security.
  • Cleans and maintains vacant lots by removing debris, trash, and other hazards.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and occupational hazards guidelines while performing maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Provides courteous and professional customer service when interacting with tenants, property owners, the public, and any other stakeholders.
  • Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school; and three to five years of experience in general maintenance, repair work, or a similar field; Possession of relevant technical certifications in building maintenance or trade schools in areas such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, or carpentry is desirable. Or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills: KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general maintenance and repair work.
  • Skill in the repair and maintenance of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry systems within a variety of settings.
  • Knowledge of a variety of operating and mechanical principals.
  • Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to prepare concise and accurate reports of maintenance and repair needs and activities. Basic computer skills for record-keeping and communication is desirable.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment necessary to do general maintenance and repair work.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform tasks that may require lifting, climbing, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot issues with a variety of equipment.
  • Ability to learn the maintenance and repair trades.
  • Ability to adapt and respond effectively to changing priorities and emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess & maintain a valid Connecticut Driver's License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS Work involves skilled tasks and physical labor in all weather conditions. SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENTThis is a Special Fund, non-tested position. This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 128, UPSEU.Bargaining agreements available to review HERE.General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by the City pension but shall be covered by Social Security.Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 120-day probationary period. Instructions and information on this pre-employment process are included in Conditional Offer of Employment.
