Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist the UR Director in developing and implementing a strategic integrated marketing and communications plan for UH Hilo, ensuring alignment with the UH Hilo brand. Provide input for evaluating and updating the plan post-implementation.

2. Develop and identify the most effective communication tools and platforms to disseminate UH Hilo's messaging in alignment with the UH Hilo brand and UR's strategic communications and marketing plan.

3. Coordinate the ongoing development of internal and external communication content, including the management of dissemination platforms. Search for relevant topics, events, and individuals for potential media coverage, conducting research and gathering information for story development.

4. Coordinate video shoots, including producing support and directing of videographers during filming. Provide pre-writes, coordinate with talent/interviewees, conduct interviews, write copy adhering to UH Hilo style and policy, and oversee and assist in video editing.

5. Stay current with emerging issues and communication technologies to produce timely and impactful content for UH Hilo platforms.

6. Establish and manage strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective, consistent, and integrated communications that support the university's mission and strategic priorities. Maintain strategic relationships with media outlets, providing timely, thoughtful, and strategic responses to inquiries.

7. Collaborate proactively with Colleges, Departments, and Units to develop comprehensive communications plans aligned with strategic initiatives, including internal communications to prevent the disenfranchisement of internal stakeholders.

8. Ensure the university's unique responsibilities to Hawai?i's indigenous people, language, and culture are central to all communication efforts and platforms.

9. Oversee the development, writing, and dissemination of news releases for UH Hilo, utilizing platforms that allow for effective tracking and pursue optimal exposure, impact, and engagement rates according to industry standards.

10. Coordinate media activities and the preparation and delivery of responses to media requests. Develop and maintain professional contacts with businesses, community leaders, and media outlets to promote UH Hilo's various initiatives.

11. Assist with special events related to public relations efforts and serve as the primary contact and liaison with the UH system communications office for campus film and video requests from external parties.

12. Support internal relations events, focusing on communications for welcome activities, awards, recognitions, Chancellor engagements, and other ceremonies or special events as assigned.

13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for communications, marketing and/or public relations; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of communications, marketing and/or public relations as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.

3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with communications, marketing and/or public relations.

4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.

5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and others listed below.

8. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

9. Demonstrated broad writing experience in areas such as media and public relations (press releases, newsletters, briefs, fact sheets, talking points), social media, and emergency communication.

10. Demonstrated ability to multitask and handle a wide variety of assignments simultaneously on deadline.

11. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and organization skills, attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

12. Ability to use computer software programs and cloud-based applications such as Microsoft Office; Adobe Acrobat; Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides; or comparable programs.

13. Familiarity with various standard style guides.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Experience working with and knowledge of post-secondary education and its organizational structure, policies, and procedures.

2. Familiarity with conventional publication design layout concepts and ability to supervise design layout and set-up.
