ABOUT GALT

Incorporated in 1946, Galt is a growing community with approximately 26,000 residents located approximately 20 miles south of Sacramento along Highway 99. The City is led by five elected council members, the Mayor being appointed.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Galt is currently accepting applications for

Public Works Supply Technician.

ADDITIONAL PAY (UPON ASSIGNMENT AND ELIGIBILITY):

* Longevity Pay - beginning at 15 years of service - 5%; 20 years of service 7.5%.

* Bilingual Pay - $50 per month.

* Medical-in-lieu - Employees who waive the City's medical coverage shall receive $200 per month for employee only, $350 per month for employee plus one, and $500 per month for family.

* Incentives - up to 2.5% - 10%

BENEFITS:

* Tuition Reimbursement - Up to $4,000 per fiscal year.

* Holiday Pay - 14 holidays; thirteen (13) paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday. NON-EXEMPT

Under general supervision, orders, purchases, receives, distributes, controls, and maintains an inventory of parts, construction materials, supplies, and services in support of the City's Public Works maintenance programs; performs routine logistical, office administrative, and recordkeeping duties related to purchasing and inventory control; performs a variety of semi-skilled field maintenance work; and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Public Works Maintenance Manager. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This journey-level class responsible for purchasing, maintaining, and distributing the inventory of parts, materials, supplies, and equipment required to maintain the Central Shop, the Corporation Yard, and in streets and underground utility field maintenance operations. The work also includes the intermittent performance of a variety of semi-skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair, and operation of City infrastructure, including streets, traffic signs and structures, storm and sanitary sewers, and water and wastewater systems. Incumbents are expected to work independently, exercise judgment and initiative, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

* Orders, receives, stores, and maintains an inventory of parts, materials, and supplies to be used in the service and repair of the City's vehicles and equipment, as well as in the construction, maintenance, modification, and operation of City infrastructure.

* Identifies and contacts vendors for price quotes and availability for supplies and goods; coordinates purchasing details with vendors, including pricing revisions, order cancellations, discontinued items, acceptable substitutes, delivery date revisions, and invoice discrepancies.

* Receives, unpacks, counts, and inspects materials and supplies to insure accurate quantity and quality; checks invoices against purchase orders and receipts for discrepancies.

* Conducts physical inventories on parts, materials, and supplies, and maintains and tracks inventory records on a computer database; maintains automated inventory and vendor lists.

* Prepares purchase orders and places orders for various supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.

* Issues and distributes materials, parts, supplies, and equipment to maintenance workers, operators, and mechanics.

* Maintains fuel records for City vehicles; verifies and monitors fuel usage from City tanks.

* Maintains service truck tool inventory lists and orders and distributes tools.

* Repairs and maintains assigned small equipment and supply items such as barricades, portable lighting, utility vehicles, and signage assemblies.

* Researches and locates resources for non-standard materials, tools, and equipment; determines the appropriateness and/or feasibility of substitution.

* Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.

* Performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair and operation of City infrastructure, including streets, traffic signs and structures, storm and sanitary sewers, water and wastewater systems.

* Maintains an inventory of surplus items and equipment for disposal in accordance with established procedures.

* Maintains operating records, tracking systems and files; prepares basic reports and summaries; enters and retrieves data from a computer terminal.

* Sets and monitors security and alarm systems.

* Maintains storage and warehouse areas in a clean and orderly condition.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

* Principles and practices of automotive inventory, maintenance, and store keeping.

* Basic principles, practices, equipment, materials, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of automobiles and vehicles.

* Stock and inventory control procedures, including receiving, storing, and issuing supplies and materials.

* Unload, move, and store items using hand trucks and forklifts, operate a vehicle for transporting parts and supplies, and use hand tools to make minor repairs.

* Enter data into and retrieve data from an automated inventory system with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform the work.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of automotive/equipment parts purchasing or inventory experience. Some equipment maintenance experience is desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:

* Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license within 60 days of hire and have a satisfactory driving record.

* Possession of Forklift Operator Certification within probationary period.

Licenses and certificates listed below are desirable, but not required at the time of appointment. However, at the discretion of the City and depending upon business necessity, certain persons in this class may be required to obtain any of the below listed licenses, certificates, or specialized education and training within a specified timeframe.

* Possession of Collection System Maintenance I Certification or above.

* Possession of Forklift Trainer Certification.

* Possession of Traffic Control Technician Certification.

* Possession of Water Distribution System Operator I (D1) or above.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in a standard shop setting and work with a variety of equipment parts and machinery inventory; to operate a motor vehicle; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves walking and working on slippery surfaces. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees primarily work in the centralized maintenance shop and warehouse and are exposed to loud noise levels, vibration, confining workspaces, chemicals, dust, paint fumes, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, grease, oils, solvents, machinery with extremely hot surfaces and/or moving parts, and moving objects or other vehicles. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and background investigation, including fingerprinting. Must be available for shift work, standby assignments, and work emergency overtime as required. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in confined areas with exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and fumes.
