Overview The Public Works Technician I in Vegetation is responsible for maintaining and mowing the City's rights-of-ways and drainage ditches, while operating various tools and equipment such as but not limited to trucks, trailer, zero turn mowers, chainsaws, weed-eaters, blowers, and pole-saws. Additional job duties may be assigned or required. Must be able to be on-call as well as work outside regular work hours and/ or overtime as needed. Will be required to work during City emergencies. Responsibilities Obey all traffic laws while operating fleet vehicle and equipment from one location to another. Follow all City policies Able to operate on even or uneven terrain such as treets & earthen rights-of-way Perform daily Pre/Post-trip inspections on all types of equipment and vehicles Follow the Traffic control standards as per the Texas MUTCD Work Zone Traffic Control Guide. Direct traffic control at job site by Flagging, cones, barrel and barricades. Know how to set up message boards, water barriers, Type I, II, II Barricade during normal and emergency operations Operates vehicle to different locations, driving on drainage ditch rights-of-way, vehicle inspection, pick up trash on streets and ditch right-of-way prior to moving Operate motorized equipment around poles, signs, guardrails, inlets, cut tree limbs, blow grass off streets and sidewalks, operates tools to maintain R.O.W and drainage system Guide and instruct temp employees assisting brush crew Respond to after hours and weekend emergencies. Must work under emergency responses during and/ or after any city emergency event. Example: Hurricanes, tropical storms, ice storms or any other city emergency. All employees will work On-Call rotation schedule and must be able to work different rotation shift under emergency responses Must be able to lead a team if needed Keep materials stock in vehicles assignment, must communicate when supply/ material are low Work in high traffic areas, confined spaces and/ or elevated positions Must be able to evaluate safe work conditions Must be able to communicate with internal and external customers Ensure proper communication with the Foreman, Work Coordinator, Planner/ Scheduler, and Assistant Director Complete daily reports and work orders legibly May be asked to perform other duties as assigned Position Type and Typical Hours of Work Non exempt - Full-Time Non rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; must be available to work additional hours as needed In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services. Minimum Qualifications High School/ GED No prior experience Licenses and Certifications Required A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire Required within six (6) months of hire Certification in Traffic Control & Flagging Employment Testing Employment is contingent on passing any post-offer pre-employment screening as listed below: Criminal Background Check: Yes Motor Vehicle Record Check: Yes Drug Screening: Yes Physical Exam: Yes Basis of Rating A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
