Clerks process arrest reports and a variety of case reports and distribute them as necessary. Additional duties include assisting in the absence of the lobby clerk and processing incoming requests for statistics, case reports, accident reports, and background checks. The following are essential duties for this position, performed with or without reasonable accommodation.Essential (primary)Answers all non-emergency department phone lines. Enter all non- emergency/not in progress calls into the Dispatch CAD screen. Clerks are responsible for obtaining and entering this information quickly and accurately so officers have the necessary information to be dispatched or to assign themselves to the call. Determine nature of calls, respond accordingly by answering questions, providing service, and/or transferring to appropriate division or agency. Processes all incident case reports, supplements, logs, letters, and memos by deadlines, where applicable.Enter information into system(s). Ensures files are properly processed and filed, and maintains the security of these files. Distributes reports and statistical information as needed to other criminal justice agencies and/or to the public, when required. Assist officers and other personnel with necessary departmental functions.Perform all other duties as assigned by the Records Manager or Assistant Records Supervisor.Take all reasonable steps to maintain a safe work environment.Non-Essential (secondary)Perform all duties as described in the job description of Front Desk Clerk for the Bloomington Police Department during weekend schedule, some holidays, and during the absence/time off of the Front Desk Clerk. Job RequirementsKnowledge and experience equivalent to at least two years prior office/clerical experience.Experience using Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel, as well as Google Drive and the internet. Demonstrated ability to learn new software.Ability to successfully complete in-service training. Ability to learn and adhere to the reporting requirements of the FBI's Uniformed Crime Reporting and National Incident Based Reporting System.Ability to demonstrate knowledge of Bloomington geography (streets, landmarks, and businesses).Ability to type at least 40 words per minute, preferred.Ability to become a bonded Notary Public in the State of Indiana.Ability to become (IDACS) Indiana Data and Communications Systems certified.Ability to accurately proofread documents and to write and revise for accurate grammar, spelling, and punctuation.Must pass a criminal history background check. Knowledge of modern office equipment including: computer, iPad, copier, microfilm equipment, shredder, fax, fingerprinting tools, and multi-line telephone. Difficulty of Work and Personal Work RelationshipDIFFICULTY OF WORK:Incumbents are frequently exposed to stressful situations associated with requests for mostly non-emergency police assistance, although sometimes requests are emergent. Must continue during weekend duty/shift with little break time.Incumbent performs duties in a modern office environment and occasionally must lift, stoop, climb stairs, and move heavy file boxes. Incumbent is exposed to confidential, sensitive, and explicitly detailed and graphic information of criminal acts through case reports and contact with the public that may be emotionally disturbing.Incumbent will encounter public complaints and disputes of a hostile nature and/or tone. Incumbents will need to have the ability to effectively and calmly communicate during various, often stressful, situations.Work is performed on varying shifts (1st, 2nd or 3rd Shifts), weekends, holidays, special events, and overtime as required. Incumbents must be able to work overtime and holidays, as required.PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:Incumbent maintains frequent contact with department superiors, co-workers, police officials, dispatchers, representatives of other criminal justice agencies, representatives of City departments, and members of the general public requesting assistance.   • Eligible employees receive 13 paid holidays per year. They may earn up to 4 weeks (160 hours) of Paid Time Off in their first year of employment and 5 weeks (200 hours) in their second calendar year of employment.

Employees may contribute additional pre-taxed dollars to a 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan account to supplement their retirement earnings. The City will contribute double the amount of the employee's 457 (b) contribution to a 401(a) account up to $30 per pay.
  • Health, vision, and dental insurance premiums are subsidized by the City and are available on day one of employment to regular employees. Employees may elect the High Deductible Insurance plan with the City providing an HSA contribution and if the employee is a non-smoker or participating in the Tobacco Cessation program, the employee only plan is at no cost to the employee.
  • Employees and their dependents (ages 3 and up) who are on the City's health insurance may utilize the City Employee Health Clinic.
