This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance of parks, trails, athletic fields and other properties within the City of Fife. The Recreation Leader 3 assists with training and mentoring of part-time seasonal staff. Employees are expected to function effectively and cooperatively as a member of a crew. The work requires the safe operation of hand, power and automotive equipment to avoid injuries to the employee, other employees, the public and damage to City equipment, facilities and structures. Duties require interacting with the public in a respectful and professional manner. Work is performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions or inside depending on the assignment and the season of the year. Physical strength, agility, eye/hand coordination, normal vision and depth perception are required to perform duties. Must maintain flexibility and be available to meet with supervisory staff as required. Hours of work vary and include evenings and weekends. The anticipated schedule is Wednesday 7 a.m. - 12 p.m. and Thursday - Saturday 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Any single position may not be assigned all duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all the duties that may be assigned.
- Assists in the maintenance of parks, trails, right of ways, and natural resource areas.
- Operate hand, power and automotive equipment to mow turf while exercising safety precautions to avoid obstacles and people.
- Inspects parks and playgrounds ensuring cleanliness and safety.
- Collect litter and empty trash cans.
- Abate graffiti and repair vandalism
- Clean restrooms and perform janitorial duties.
- Drag, rake, chalk and set bases for ball field areas.
- Perform landscape work including hand mowing, edging, blowing, weeding, and pruning of parks, city and adjacent properties as assigned.
- Assist in preparing facilities and setting up and taking down equipment for department programs and events.
- Assists with supervision, training and mentoring of seasonal staff and volunteers as assigned.
- Attends all staff meetings as required.
- Contributes to a positive team environment.
- Wears proper safety equipment necessary for the job.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTSKnowledge of:
- Parks maintenance and equipment.
- General first aid
- Safe usage and operation of landscape maintenance tools and equipment.
- Legal and defensive driving practices.
- Operation of handheld data recording devices and computers for the purpose of updating records and recording work production.
- Requirements of maintaining tools and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly fashion.

Education and ExperienceRequired Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years old at time of hire.
- Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or equivalent and one year of paid work experience performing grounds maintenance activities, or any combination of experience, education and training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Experience performing a broad range of horticultural, landscaping, and building maintenance preferred.
- Valid Washington driver's license. Must be 18 years of age or older to operate maintenance equipment. Must have a good driving record.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain and maintain within 6 months of hire, a valid First Aid/CPR/AED certificate.
