Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and directs a wide variety of recreation activities, special events and population-based programs. Work involves public contact in promoting the programs and in maintaining public interest and a cooperative relationship with businesses and civic clubs, and state and local agencies involved in public recreation activities. This position is classified as non-exempt and is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime regulations.EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Primary Tasks:

  • Plans, promotes, supervises, and implements Town-wide programs and special events.
  • Organizes, plans, and supervises various community-based activities.
  • Prepares budgets for recreation programs and events.
  • Prepares purchase requisitions for programs and special events.
  • Conducts participant registration for recreation activities by accepting payments, issuing receipts, and enrolling participants.
  • Maintains an accurate database on participant data to be used for financial records, advertising programs, and statistical data for recreational program planning.
  • Prepares after-action reports for recreation programs and special events.
  • Oversees the rental process of all non-athletic outdoor facility rentals.
  • Assists with creating programs to be held at the Recreation Center.
    • Prepares and administers surveys to citizens to assess interest in recreation programs.
    • Collects and creates reports based on the citizen surveys.
    • Plans programs based on the survey results.
    • Keeps inventory of needed supplies and equipment for recreation activities.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and schedules limited service staff.
  • Coordinates and directs the duties and tasks of the Recreation Activities Coordinator.
  • Assists in coordinating with independent contractors to set up programs.
  • Attends continuing education opportunities (i.e., conferences and workshops).
  • Monitors and updates Parks and Recreation webpage on Town website and rentals website.
  • Markets events and programs via flyers and social media content creation and serves as Marketing Liaison to the Community Relations Department.
  • Performs other duties as required.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Calculator, computer, fax, other general office equipment, and other assigned equipment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This position reports to the Parks and Recreation Director.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Employee exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, both hot and cold weather.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThis position works 40 hours a week during the seven-day workweek. Weekends are necessary at times to fulfill job duties. The stress level of the job is low to moderate.SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATIONEDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in recreation or related field.

EXPERIENCE: Experience of an increasingly responsible nature in the creation, planning, and implementation of large-scale events; experience in the supervision of employees; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of first aid, care, prevention and safety precautions applicable in various programs.
  • Ability to teach new programs until established.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise a comprehensive program for leisure activities and population-based programs, and determine needs for carrying out these programs.
  • Ability to work effectively with different age groups and to stimulate their interest.
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, Town and County officials, Wake County Public School System, social and civic organizations, and the general public.
  • Ability to be certified in CPR and First Aid.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL.
  • Ability to be certified as a Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) by the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).

Special Requirements: Possession of professional recreation certificate from NCRPA preferred. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license required.
