This position is located on a Forest Service Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. The incumbent of this position assists in involving in providing leadership and guidance to students in a group living environment and provides practical counseling to students. The incumbent assists students, peers, and subordinates in understanding the relevance of, and promotes the development of positive social skills among students through modeling appropriate behavior, positive intervention, and positively intervening and teaching appropriate healthy habits for stress relief, and employability_ skills for workplace success. Participates in the Behavior Management System and/or the Student Code of Conduct program as necessary to insure proper workplace/community conduct, appearance, and behavior. Sets a positive example as a role model to students by displaying appropriate etiquette, timeliness, and dress. This position is a Test Designated Position (TDP) under the Forest Service/Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program. All applicants selected for this position will be required to submit to a pre-employment urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Incumbents of this position will be required to submit to a urinalysis on an ongoing random basis, after appointment as directed. MAJOR DUTIES Provides on-site supervision of recreational activities to students with various skill levels and backgrounds. Ensures a safe, healthy atmosphere for all students performing recreational and physical fitness activities. Ensures that self-directed activities are carried out in accordance with the recreational plans. Identifies and makes changes in processes and/or procedures in order to have full participation by students. Schedules, coordinates, and supervises recurring group activities such as basketball, volleyball, softball, including making reservations, acquiring transportation, and other related arrangements and providing information concerning these activities based on overall recreation program plans Identifies and recommends changes or modification to the recreation and physical fitness program. Performs special assignments in facility-wide programs or volunteer sponsored activities. Meets individually with students to discuss day-to-day problems encountered in recreational and physical fitness activities. Gives practical advice and counsel to students and proposes solutions to routine problems without imposing personal values. Ensures that facilities are properly prepared, including needed equipment and supplies are on hand for scheduled activities. Personally, makes sure the facilities are set-up for physical activities. Makes reservations, collects payments, and distributes information concerning games and activities. Responsible for ensuring students are aware of safety requirements concerning the activities, facility and equipment. Ensures compliance with and enforcement of all safety rules and regulations. Submits monthly recreation and other reports as required. Ability to communicate effectively with students to be able to address and answer questions to provide information, inspections, and counsel. Skill in maintaining order and recognizing social, behavioral or disciplinary problems to be able to promote harmony among students and obtain help for complicated problems. Instruct students on good sportsmanship, team cooperation, and group activities for healthy student interaction skills. Operates government vehicles to transport students to and from off-site activities. Requires current state issued drivers license and insurability. This position is required to work swing shift and night shift when determined by the needs of the Center. May be assigned to work other departments as deemed necessary for adequate coverage of student population for safety and security needs. Performs other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The supervisor provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, deadlines, and priority of assignments. The supervisor provides additional, specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments including suggested work methods or advice on source material available. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments in dependently without specific instructions, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the supervisor for a decision or help. The supervisor assures that the finished work and methods used are technically accurate and in compliance with instructions or established procedures. Review of the work increases with more difficult assignments if the employee has not previously performed similar assignments. Personal Contact Contacts are primarily with students in a recreational setting. Contacts are also with other Center employees, and may include local community and general public visitors, and visiting family and friends of the_ students. Purpose of Contacts Contact are to obtain, clarify, and exchange information to coordinate student recreation efforts of the residential/recreation program. Goal of the recreation is to assist in the development of safe healthy habits of each student. Contacts with students involve a high degree of interpersonal skill as they may be hostile, aggressive, and unresponsive to leadership or direction. Conflict may arise between students which require skill to diffuse volatile situations, especially in team or group activities. Physical Demands The work may require extreme physical exertion when participating in group sports, or instructing students. Position requires periods of sitting, standing, walking, and running. Work Environment Everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions are involved. Moderate risks or discomforts may occasionally be encountered in activities such as hiking, running for exercise or team sports, group activities such as basketball, baseball, soccer, or other team sports, and general physical fitness practices. The work environment consists of inside and outdoor activities.
