Therefore, we encourage individuals from all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences to consider employment with the City of Janesville and serve the residents of Wisconsin's Park Place .OBJECTIVE:Under general supervision and guidance of the Recreation Programmer, the Basketball Referee is responsible for enforcing the basketball league rules set by the City of Janesville-Recreation Division and supervising all basketball patrons.RELATIONSHIPS:Reports to: Recreation ProgrammerWorks with seasonal employees on a regular basis and communicates with other division employees, professional staff, league participants and the general public.Each game officiated will equal 1 hour of pay, up to 4 games a night. $33.00/game (w/o WIAA certification)$38.00/game (w/ WIAA certification) Essential DutiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Understand league rules and have ability to provide clarification (Official W.I.A.A. basketball rules govern, except as provided by the Recreation Division).Understand, clarify and enforce league rules.Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service.Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and follow a pre-determined course of action.Handle disputes on the court.Eject players when necessary.Be fair and consistent.Provide first aid and react appropriate in emergency situations.Report any issues to the Recreation Programmer.OTHER DUTIES:Ensure court is free of safety hazards prior to and during games.Be a liaison between league and office.Clean up any trash in the bleachers and gym before leaving the gym.Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.Education and Experience Experience with the fundamentals of the game of basketball.Previous basketball officiating experience desired.Certifications/Licenses:W.I.A.A. basketball official certification desired, but not required.Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications, or willing to obtain.Other: Must be 18 years of age or older.Ability to work evenings.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:Knowledge of the rules and fundamentals of the game of basketball.Skills officiating basketball, playing basketball or coaching basketball preferred.Ability to follow city/department/division policies, work independently and make sound decisions.Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.Must have great customer relations as well as reliable transportation.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, department professionals, staff, customers and the general public. Supplemental InformationThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Wear proper official clothing (black pants/shorts, stripped black and white official shirt, black tennis shoes, whistle, etc.) to allow for proper referee action.Must have the physical ability to move up and down the court during all basketball games.Ability to work in fast paced environment moving up and down the court calling all shots, fouls, possessions, time outs, etc. while the game is in play.Perform essential program support to program activities which may include, but not limited to the following activities: semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, overhead, at ground level, twisting of the waist, shoulders and legs.Ability to move and sit or stand for long periods of time, up to 4 ½ hours at a time.See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.No benefits available for seasonal positions.
