The Prince George's County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Refuse Collections Inspector I/IIgrade A10, in the Collection Inspection Section.

About the Position

This is entry-level inspection and code enforcement work to ensure compliance with codes, ordinances, and contracts governing the collection and disposal of refuse and recycling by County contractors for multifamily properties and commercial sector businesses. At this level, incumbents perform routine refuse collection and disposal of contracted property cleaning assignments under the close supervision of a higher-level inspector within the context of established departmental policies and procedures.

About the Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

Examples of Work

* The incumbent of this position will ensure compliance with codes, ordinances and contracts governing the collection/disposal of refuse, yard waste and recyclables by County contractors and County forces.

* Incumbents, under general supervision, perform the full range of refuse collection assignments within the context of established Departmental policies/procedures while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, homeowners, and the general public.

Qualifications

* Graduation from high school or equivalent plus

* Six (6) months public contact experience in community services occupations and customer service.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training is also accepted.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Associate Degree in Business Management, Business Administration or a related subject.

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:

* Some knowledge of Recycling and Waste Management Best Practices and or holds or obtains related certification from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), a nationally recognized expert and training authority in the solid waste industry.

* Some knowledge of computer software programs and hand-held devices and ability to update records electronically.

* Some knowledge of the laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations relevant to solid waste storage, collection, and disposal.

* Some knowledge of the physical aspects of the County including names and locations of primary and secondary roads.

* Ability to read and interpret applicable sections of the County Code and County and State laws about Solid Waste.

* Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.

* Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with people.

* Ability to prepare and read waste collection maps.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, and the public.

* Ability to inspect the solid waste collection activities of contractors and collection crews.

* Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

* Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

* Ability to lift 50 lbs.

* A valid Maryland State driver's license is required upon appointment.

* Must pass a physical exam

* Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.

* Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.

* Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
