Description Operates refuse collection trucks on pre-established routes within City, collects refuse from homes and businesses, and hauls to sanitary landfill and unloads. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Drives/operates refuse collection truck following established route; picks-up refuse at residents' home; deposits in truck; operates compactor to condense materials.
- Drives/operates refuse collection truck following established route; attaches and hoists refuse containers at commercial businesses, operates hydraulic lift, and dumps into truck; returns containers to original location; operates compactor to condense materials.
- Drives/operates refuse collection truck to sanitary landfill location; operates hydraulic equipment to empty truck and deposit refuse at specified site.
- Maintains and rebuilds dumpsters; operates welding and metal working tools.
- Washes trucks, greases packer parts, and performs other routine maintenance, including checking oil level and tire pressure; reports repair/overhaul work to the lead equipment mechanic.
- Places tags on refuse containers indicating non-compliance with City ordinances and collection rules.
- Reports quantity of refuse collections, accessibility, and loading time requirements for commercial accounts on a checklist form.
- May operate City dump trucks in emergency situations including floods and snowstorms.
- Assists other City departments as needed.
Requirements
- Must have the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize workload in a timely and effective manner.
- Must be able to communicate effectively using both written and oral methods.
Education and Experience
- Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Iowa Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
- Must have one year of heavy truck operating experience, including driving in close places.
