Position: Refuse Maintenance Worker

Location: Department of Public Works: Refuse Division

Salary: $54,038.40 - $66,393.60

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs semi-skilled manual work requiring skills of less than journeyman grade in the maintenance of the City's Recycling Depot, tasks include assisting residents, providing information and proper disposal of items accepted at the site. Assist maintenance of trash collection routes; ensures that sidewalks are clean of trash and appliances as homeowners and tenants move. Assists in the cleanup of street leading to and from the City; pickup of all trash within City recreation areas, athletic fields, parks and playgrounds including DPW Field Park; pickup of trash spillage and tires throughout the City, and the cleanup of debris from fire damages buildings and the removal of graffiti. Picks up illegal dumping materials, shopping carts, tires, etc. Performs similar or other related duties as assigned by the DPW Commissioner, Refuse General Foreman or designee.

Supervision:

Works under the direct supervision of the Refuse General Foreman following department rules, regulations and safety procedures and policies to complete assignments. Priorities are established by the supervisor.

Requirements:

Preferred Education and Experience:

High school diploma required; technical training in the use of tools and construction equipment desired; two years of general maintenance experience; experience operating trucks and heavy motor equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment:

Work is performed outside, with exposure to constant loud noise and potential exposure to equipment with moving mechanical parts; outdoor work may be performed in adverse weather conditions, with exposure to hazards associated with use of heavy equipment. Workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations often requiring emergency responses. The employee operates a variety of equipment, such as trucks and other heavy and light equipment. The employee operates various hand power and pneumatic tools. The employee generally has contact with other City departments, utility personnel and occasionally contractors. Errors could result in personal injury, injury to others, delay or loss of service and damage to buildings or equipment.

Additional Requirement:

Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License Class B with air brake endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of techniques and principles of trash and rubbish removal; must have knowledge of the City's layout relative to the location of routes and days of pickup. Ability to communicate effectively with the general public and explain regulations and policies.

Essential Functions:

Work is performed outdoors; some physical effort is required to move appliances and rubbish. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate equipment, walk, stand, speak, sit, hear, reach with hands and arms, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, and climb. Required to lift or move items weighing up to sixty pounds. Physical ability to use hand tools and drive motor vehicles. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and operate vehicles.
