Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as Regional Supervisor. Performs highly technical work as the regional office supervisor in planning, directing and coordinating several multiphase environmental health programs in the regional office. Supervises professional staff in the regional office.

Essential Functions

* Plans and directs all regional environmental health programs, including swimming pools and bathing beaches, water well construction and well pump installation, private water supplies, non-community public water supplies, private sewage disposal, plumbing, manufactured housing, mobile home parks, youth camps, recreation areas, migrant labor camps, solid waste disposal, nuisances, mass gatherings, environmental toxicology, pesticides, vector control, product safety, mobile home tie down, food safety, hospital sanitation and institutional sanitation.

* Reviews plans and specifications provided to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local environmental health laws and regulations.

* Serves as full-line supervisor.

* Schedules and conducts or directs training courses in various technical programs for Public Health and local health department staff, the regulated industry and the general public addressing environmental health activities covered by Department laws and regulations.

* Explains and interprets state Laws and Department rules and regulations, policies and procedures as they relate to environmental health programs to the general public, public officials, local health departments and other local groups.

* Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

* Requires possession of a Bachelor's Degree in public health, occupational health, safety engineering, environmental, biological or physical science related field with a minimum of 30 semester hours in the physical and/or biological sciences.

* Requires prior experience equivalent to four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative experience related to environmental health investigations and administration of environmental public health programs.

* Requires licensure as an environmental health practitioner.

Preferred Qualifications

* Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal environmental health and public health laws and regulations.

* Extensive knowledge of administrative procedure and management principles.

* Four (4) years experience serving as a supervisor.

* Two (2) years experience providing expert technical and legal testimony in court cases.

* Four (4) years experience delivering training courses regarding environmental health programs.

* Four (4) years experience communicating with various entities both verbally and written.

Conditions of Employment

* Requires the ability to travel extensively within the State.

* Requires a current and valid driver's license.

Term Appointment:

Candidates hired into a term position shall be appointed for a term of 4 years and are subject to a probationary period. The term may be renewed for successive four-year terms at the Director of the Department of Public Health's discretion.
