Primary Purpose of Position:

The Registrar is a specialist assisting with the statewide responsibility for the collections management of more than 80,000 historic objects including their acquisition, identification, research, and care. The Registrar creates electronic and paper records for all artifacts entering and leaving the custody of State Historic Sites. In addition, the Registrar is responsible for assuring the integrity of records in the collections database (Re:Discovery Proficio). The Registrar advises Historic Sites personnel on complex legal issues regarding acquisition of collections; advises staff on storage and exhibit environments; develops and implements statewide training in collections care and maintenance; and handles incoming and outgoing loans. The Registrar also participates in the installation of exhibits and couriers artifacts as necessary.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Preparing all forms and records for new accessions and deaccessions, including IRS documentation.

* Updating information accurately in the collection paper files and in the Proficio database.

* Managing the Collections file room.

* Serving as system administrator for the Proficio database. Train staff users in software functions.

* Creating, updating, and maintaining accurate information in the Proficio database.

* Generate loan agreements and receipts for both incoming and outgoing loans.

* Responsible for submitting insurance claims and serving as a liaison to our fine arts insurance provider.

* Providing annual documentation of the collection and financial reports to the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

* Training new Collections Stewards in Historic Sites collections procedures.

* Serving as courier for loans and performing condition inspections.

* Assisting as needed with exhibit installations.

Position/Physical Requirements:

* Requires attention to detail, teamwork, good planning and coordination skills, self-motivation, and proper judgment.

* The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees

* Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

* Ability to travel on overnight trips.

* Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 90 days of employment.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

* Demonstrated experience interpreting history through artifacts and/or other media.

* Demonstrated experience researching, documenting, and cataloging artifacts.

* Demonstrated experience speaking in public.

* Demonstrated experience interacting with diverse groups.

Management Prefers:

* Considerable knowledge of North Carolina, Southern, and American history with concentrations in material culture and decorative arts.

* A comprehensive knowledge of museum ethics, principles, laws and standards.

* Demonstrated experience with collections management software.

Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution

AND

two years of museum or related work

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description:

The Museum Curator I is the Registrar for North Carolina State Historic Sites. Along with the Chief Curator and Curator, this individual supports the curation and collections management for the division. This position is supervised by the Chief Curator who is under the direct supervision of the Director of Curatorial Services.

Division Description:

The primary purpose of the Historic Sites Section is to preserve, develop, maintain, operate and interpret the States Historic Sites across North Carolina.
