Job Type Full-timeDescriptionWe are looking for an enthusiastic candidate to fill a Research Assistant position in the Kessinger Lab. Under the general supervision of Dr. Kessinger, you will conduct various routine and specialized histological and/or imaging tasks, as well assmall animal handling and molecular and cell biology assays. Multitasking, strong fine motor skills and impeccable organizational skills with an incredible attention to detail are necessary to perform learned procedures with speed, precision and understanding of the theory behind the protocols. All aspects are trainable but experience in histology, in vivo imaging, and/or small animal handling or related areas are preferred. As part of the Kessinger Lab you will interact and contribute to various research aims in a multidisciplinary environment.Responsibilities may include:
- Assist and perform molecular biology assays, including - genotyping, PCR, Western Blot, and immunological staining.
- Assist with daily maintenance and operation of histological, imaging, and general lab equipment.
- Maintain inventories of laboratory reagents.
- Maintain exacting notes on processes performed on samples.
- Perform or assist in routine animal imaging, surgeries, and colony maintenance.
- Manage computer files and data related to imaging and lab workflows.
- Adhere to MMRI and departmental safety policies and SOPs and guidelines while demonstrating competency in facility and instrument safety protocols.
Requirements
- Educational Background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline.
- Work Experience: 1 year of related laboratory experience preferred.
- Experience or familiarity in small animal handling techniques and willingness to learn.
- Interest or experience in utilizing specialized imaging capture and analysis software.
- Familiarity with histological equipment, such as microtomes, cryostats, and embedding stations and an understanding of basic histological techniques is a plus
- Enjoy hands-on work.
- All colleagues should have functional knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, calendar management and Internet Explorer time tracking and document management. (e.g. SharePoint, Activity Tracker) Knowledge and use of other systems based upon job function may be required.
- Must be a self-starter, dependable, accurate, mature, trust-worthy and dedicated to working with and around animals. The employee must follow instructions precisely and perform work according to prescribed SOPs.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills, keen attention to detail and the ability to diligently record and maintain laboratory records are crucial.
- May be exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials.
