Organization Overview Ribosomes are molecular machines that catalyze protein synthesis in all cells. While the principles of protein synthesis are relatively well understood, very little is known about how the ribosome itself is assembled. Our lab is interested in elucidating the molecular mechanisms of eukaryotic ribosome assembly. We are studying the initial events of this process by using a multidisciplinary approach that combines structural biology (X-ray crystallography and cry-EM) with biochemical, genetic, and cell biology techniques. Structural and functional studies of early ribosome assembly intermediates are complemented by the biochemical characterization of multi-protein complexes. Overview The ideal candidate will be working closely with the PI and a small group of researchers within the lab and will be an integral contributor to lab organization and management, experiments, and will be providing both technical and conceptual scientific input. Responsibilities An important component of the Research Assistant's responsibilities will be mammalian tissue culture and the generation of new cell lines using state-of-the art genome editing techniques for subsequent live-cell imaging and biochemical studies. For mechanistic studies, prior experience with yeast genetics, biochemistry and exposure to structural biology is an advantage. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in science required; advanced degree and an interest in structural biology or biochemistry strongly preferred. Educational emphasis in molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field is required. Must be highly detail-oriented and focused, inherently motivated, and able to work as part of a team as well as a mentored atmosphere for a research project.
