Job Type Full-timeDescriptionPosition Summary:The Research Assistant assists the Principal Investigator and Postdocs by carrying out research experiments. The ability to grasp the rationale for the methods used and careful attention to details of the protocols are important for success. A high level of responsibility, flexibility, and independence are required to carry out the diverse duties of this position. Essential Duties/Responsibilities:•Conduct standardized chemical, biological, or biochemical assays and laboratory analyses, eg. Western blot, rtPCR, cell-based assays.•Culture cells as needed by lab goals. Perform drug studies as directed by the PI.•Carry out histologic and immunocytochemical experiments. Use computerized image analysis systems to collect data from the experiments. Analyze data with Microsoft Excel and statistics packages such as SPSS with assistance of PI.•Maintain proper documentation using book using proper note taking practices.•Prepares oral and written reports for the P.I. on research to include, but not limited to: coherently and effectively communicating our laboratory research by writing abstracts, manuscripts, grant proposals and data reports for grants and oral presentations with corresponding slide presentation for PI, local and national meetings.•Collect mouse blood and tissue samples for genotyping. Work with PI to plan and carry out mouse crosses and breeding. Assist with mouse phenotyping.•Assist with animal surgery, transport and recordkeeping. Work with PI to perform mouse drug and behavioral studies.•Work cooperatively with other PIs and staff in the laboratory to carry out collaborative research.•Train and assist other staff and non-laboratory personnel in lab procedures and equipment.•Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned. RequirementsRequirements:•Bachelors in biology, chemistry, or a related science preferred. •One year experience in a laboratory setting, two years preferred•Interest or experience in utilizing specialized imaging software•Familiarity with histological equipment, such as, microtomes, cryostats, and embedding stations and understanding of basic histological techniques.•The employee must follow instructions precisely and perform work according to prescribed SOPs.•The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.•The ability to be responsible, organized, and a problem solver.•A professional customer service-related demeanor.•Strong analytical, time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.•Excellent verbal/written communication and skills.•Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly MS Excel).•The ability to learn department specific systems and hardware as needed.•Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship. Physical Requirements:
- Work safely with chemicals, handle some unpleasant elements, and tolerate normal odors/airborne particulate matter of a lab is required.
- Wearing protective clothing or equipment is mandatory.
- Sustain prolonged periods of standing or sitting at a desk and working on a computer or while operating equipment.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 15 pounds frequently; and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Walk and bend from the waist occasionally.
- Reach with hands and arms.
- Speak, hear, read, and comprehend English.
