The Office of Research Compliance and Integrity (ORCI) currently supports the following research compliance areas at Grand Valley State University (GVSU): human research protections, animal welfare, conflict of interest, responsible conduct of research, export control, biosafety, radiation safety, and laser safety. This position in the ORCI will serve as a liaison between GVSU's research investigators and the committees supporting research compliance and integrity. This position is responsible for facilitating the protocol review process, supporting the function of the committees, supporting researcher education, and providing additional support to assigned compliance areas.
Opening is for a single position. Position title and salary commensurate with experience as described below.Primary Duties:Research Compliance Specialist I
- Collect, organize, review, and analyze documentation related to research records and activities in the assigned research compliance area(s) to determine whether proper university, state, and federal requirements are followed.
- Serve as specialist in the assigned area(s) and provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students.
- Serve as liaison between faculty/staff and the Office of Research Compliance and Integrity regarding Compliance Committee submission requirements.
- Assist with the coordination of the activities of compliance committees including the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Laser Safety, and Radiation Safety.
- Facilitate protocol review for IRB and IACUC submissions, including conducting reviews of human subjects research determinations and less complex exempt IRB protocols.
- Maintain competency and currency in federal laws and regulations related to assigned research compliance areas through professional development activities such as self-directed reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, and attending conferences and training.
- Develop and present educational materials, including classroom presentations, to promote research ethics and research compliance.
- Participate in post-approval monitoring activities and noncompliance investigations, as directed.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding subjects, records, and review of issues.
- Develop and update content for the ORCI website. Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.
Research Compliance Specialist IIAll duties of the Research Compliance Specialist I.
- Facilitate protocol review for IRB, IACUC, IBC, and Radiation Safety submissions, including conducting reviews of moderately complex to complex submissions.
- Review conflict of interest and commitment (COIC) submissions and develop management plans, as directed.
- Assist Director with preparing and submitting reports to outside agencies and University units
Senior Research Compliance SpecialistAll duties of the Research Compliance Specialist II
- Develop and implement policies and processes to ensure compliance with applicable protocols, laws, and regulations, while also ensuring adherence to equitable and inclusive practices Develop Technology Control Plans for export-controlled technologies.
- Complete special projects and assignments as specified by the Director.
- May serve on relevant administrative committees, such as policy committees.
Assistant DirectorAll duties of the Senior Research Compliance Specialist
- Advise the ORCI Director and institutional officials regarding compliance areas.
- Serve as subject matter expert in the assigned areas by educating, consulting, and guiding faculty, staff, and students to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and University policies.
- Develop, direct, and implement compliance program components.
- Assist in cooperating with and negotiating with University personnel, University departments, and members of the community to advance ORCI directives.
- May have supervisory responsibilities overseeing ORCI staff, clerical staff, and/or student assistants.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Research Compliance Specialist I
- Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university
- Strong organizational skills, ability to be proactive, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Basic understanding of research ethics and/or at least one area of research of research compliance (e.g., human subjects research, animal research, export controls, etc.)
- Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally and in writing with professionalism, clarity, and effectiveness
- Skilled in making good decisions based on critical and analytical thinking, experience, and judgment
Research Compliance Specialist II
- All required knowledge, skills, and abilities of the Research Compliance Specialist I position
- Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university plus 2 years relevant professional experience OR
- Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study
- Familiarity with understanding and applying applicable research compliance regulations and guidance
- Familiarity in facilitating research compliance reviews
Senior Research Compliance Specialist
- All required knowledge, skills, and abilities of the Research Compliance Specialist II position
- Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university plus 5 years relevant professional experience OR
- Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university plus 4 years relevant professional experience and 1 or more relevant certifications (e.g., CIP, CPIA, ECoP, etc.) OR
- Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years relevant professional experience OR
- Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years relevant professional experience and 1 or more relevant certifications (e.g., CIP, CPIA, ECoP, etc.)
- Proficiency in understanding and applying applicable research compliance regulations and guidance
- Proficiency in facilitating research compliance reviews
- Proficiency in educating, consulting, and guiding faculty, staff, and students in areas of research compliance
Assistant Director
- All required knowledge, skills, and ability of the Senior Research Compliance Specialist position
- Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university plus 5 years relevant professional experience OR
- Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university plus 4 years relevant professional experience and 1 or more relevant certifications (e.g., CIP, CPIA, ECoP, etc.) OR
- Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years relevant professional experience OR
- Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years relevant professional experience and 1 or more relevant certifications (e.g., CIP, CPIA, ECoP, etc.)
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing and delivering educational training programs pertaining to assigned areas of research compliance.
- Demonstrated proficiency in coordinating and conducting post-approval compliance reviews and/or noncompliance investigations in assigned areas of research compliance.
- Demonstrated proficiency in preparing statistical and administrative reports.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Research Compliance Specialist I; Research Compliance Specialist II; Senior Research Compliance Specialist; Assistant Director
- Research administration certification (e.g. CIP, CPIA, ECoP).
- Experience engaging in academic research.
- Experience working with diverse individuals and teams.
- Experience in developing and delivering interactive, multi-media training programs.
- Competency in computer programs related to electronic research administration, classroom-based and distance training, and report generation, in particular OneAegis.
- Experience designing and maintaining webpages.
- Experience supporting administrative functions of a large college or university faculty committee.
Working Conditions:Normal office environment. Some travel may be required. Partial remote work options available.
