The Research Programs and MRC Manager administers and oversees activities for MoMA's MRC fellowship program, the All Fellows curriculum, and programs for the Scholars in Residence. The Manager will act as the liaison for these programs and will help coordinate and connect initiatives related to these fellows and scholars across the institution. The position is also responsible for managing the logistical operations of the department and planning for the delivery of current and future departmental programming.The responsibilities of this position fall under two pillars:Fellowship Program Management
- Manages the MRC Fellows, in conjunction with assigned curatorial department managers, and helps maintain partnerships with the graduate art history programs at Columbia University, the CUNY Graduate Center, the NYU Institute of Fine Arts, Princeton University, and Yale University.
- In collaboration with the Director, Research Programs, plans and organizes the semiannual MRC Study Sessions, coordinating writing of session description, identification of guest scholars, recruitment of faculty and graduate student participants for partner programs, development of checklist of recommended collection objects for study, organization of viewing of works during session, and event logistics.
- Collaborating with the Director, Research Programs, plans and organizes the forthcoming Marron Lecture Series.
- Facilitates the selection process for MRC Fellows and Scholars in Residence, including circulating calls for nominations, reviewing applications, interviewing, and contacting candidates regarding application status.
- Coordinates the onboarding process for MRC Fellows and Scholars in Residence with Human Resources and applicable curatorial Department Managers to ensure fellows and scholars are connected to and welcomed by the MoMA community.
- Organizes the All Fellows program, including a regular series of meetings and conversations with internal and external colleagues.
- Plans professional development training and travel, including opportunities for building mentoring and communications skills to foster a culture of mentorship at the Museum for fellows and scholars under departmental purview.
- Solicits and manages feedback and evaluation materials to refine the MRC Fellowships and Scholars in Residence programs.
Department Management
- Collaborates with Research Programs staff and colleagues across the Museum to develop and support innovative programs such as Idea Lab, Open Study Sessions, and aspects of the All Fellows curriculum, with tasks including mapping event checklists and planning timelines to better calibrate workflows and program delivery.
- Drafts and coordinates reports on MRC Fellows and Scholars in Residence' activities to funders, the MoMA Board of Trustees and other stakeholders; helps create funding proposals as necessary.
- Manages the Research Programs department budget, including fiscal year budget development and quarterly adjustments, processing payment requests, tracking Navan use and ensuring proper coding, and reconciling regular expense reports, and contributing [to the plan for the department's financial sustainability.
- Facilitates scheduling and meeting planning for the Task Force on Cataloguing in the 21st Century.
- Works with the Director of Research Programs on scheduling regular and recurring meetings and travel planning for the department, MRC Fellows and Scholars in Residence.
- Supports and contributes to other Research Programs activities and initiatives as required.
- Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Master's degree, preferably in art history or a related field, and five or more years relevant experience in museum or gallery administration or equivalent.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- High level of diplomacy, accountability, judgment, and discretion.
- Strong program management skills.
- Experience with internal and external stakeholder management desirable.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Background in history of modern art desirable.
- Background and/or interest in development of early career professionals preferred.
- Experience with developing and improving organizational processes and protocols.
- Management and accounting skills. Demonstrated project management and problem-solving skills. Strong understanding of both macro and micro views of budget management. Strong Excel skills.
