TITLE: Residence Hall Director DEPARTMENT: Residence Life REPORTS TO: Director of Residence Life CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD STANDARD WORK HOURS: 37.5 hours per week EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt JOB SUMMARY: The Resident Hall Director is a full-time exempt professional staff member responsible for the physical and developmental function of a residence hall. Emphasis is placed on contributing to the advancement of the Office of Residence Life mission, serving as an educator, training and supervising student staff members and enforcing University policies in the residence hall. The Hall Director must be an individual that is highly motivated and enthusiastic about actively contributing to the success of KSU students. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Maintain a visible presence in the hall office
  • Maintain visibility, involvement, and accessibility with student staff and residents
  • Submit forms, reports, and documents of quality when requested
  • Be available for hall openings, closings, and high intensity times (i.e. homecoming, major games...)
  • Complete building and room inspections as assigned
  • Communicate and follow to completion all maintenance concerns
  • Manage effective desk and office operations - cleanliness, professionalism, and organization of files
  • Chair and/or participate on departmental committees to special projects as assigned
  • Reporting relevant information and progress as requested
  • Uphold policies and procedures contained in the Office of Residence Life, KSU, and state law
  • Check and respond to email and voicemail
  • Staff Development and Supervision
  • Supervise student staff members in the performance of their position responsibilities through regular individual contact, weekly staff meetings, and performance evaluation
  • Develop agendas, on-going training and team-building for staff
  • Establish self as a role model for community and staff members through supporting the overall mission, vision, and goals of the department
  • Appropriately address and work to resolve performance concerns
  • Assist in the planning and facilitating trainings for student staff and desk assistants
  • Programming and Student Development
  • Track and maintain assigned program budget
  • Provide direction to programming efforts of staff through individual and group meetings
  • Ensure that programming requirements are being met - program submission and evaluation
  • Personal and Professional Development
  • Actively seek to enhance skills in administration, interpersonal relations, group facilitation, leadership and organization, and personal success
  • Participate in all training sessions and ongoing staff development offered by the Office of Residence Life
  • Building Management
  • Ensure all storage areas are properly maintained and secured
  • Advocate for well-kept buildings both inside and out
  • Community Building
  • Initiate and oversee programs, activities, and discussions that build towards a strong community
  • Observe and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the floor and building community with staff to develop constant improvement
  • Mediate student conflicts, respond to crisis and various concerns utilizing the proper referral while upholding confidentiality at all times
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to represent the University on campus, and in the community
  • Demonstrated friendly, open, and helpful attitude to all campus constituencies
  • Ability to display a positive attitude and be flexible to change
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of community living, liability issues, health and safety issues, and community concerns
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with diverse individuals and groups
  • High level of dependability and integrity regarding expectations and responsibilities
  • Exposure to student development theories and issues
  • Skills in critical thinking, consensus building, student development, teamwork, initiative, leadership, and staff development.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
  • This position does have supervisory responsibility.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment
  • Some physical effort moving objects will be required
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk
  • Extensive evening and weekend hours may be required

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and professional Student Affairs experience required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment, demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities are required.
  • The incumbent will also be required to live in the residence hall 12 months per year.
Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel or Counseling and/or previous graduate or professional work experience in Residence Life preferred Licensing and Certifications: NA ACKNOWLEDGMENT I have received, reviewed and fully understand the job description for .
