The purpose of the RLC is to provide supervision, guidance, and support services to help high school students in a residence hall environment. This includes planning and implementing programs and activities that promote community and follow the residential curriculum developed by the department.Responsibilities of the Residence Life Coordinator:
- Maintain regular office hours and on-call duties that include monitoring the building, the sign-out system, and nightly room and safety checks.
- Communicate facility-related issues by placing work requests in a timely manner, and following up as required.
- Direct, guide, and supervise students in all non-academic areas.
- Provide counsel to students on an individual and group basis to include interpersonal issues, conflict management, and community living.
- Supervise two resident assistants (paraprofessionals) directly and ten (10) others indirectly.
- Set guidelines for acceptable behavior, interpret, and enforce GSSM policies, and address students who violate community standards.
- Support community building, personal growth, and development for all residents. Provide developmental programming for students using the Residential Curriculum and student needs.
- Communicate with parents and guardians as needed. Prepare wellness reports and regularly update parents regarding their student's progress.
- Administer discipline, when necessary, investigate minor infractions, and enter information into the database.
- Manage crises, conflicts, and emergencies in coordination with the Department of Public Safety and GSSM Security. This includes serving as a first responders for building emergencies, often accompanying students to medical appointments and/or emergency rooms.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
The Residence Life Coordinator is a full-time live in 10-month position with the state of South Carolina that is paid over 12 months with full benefits, including an apartment with amenities. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with education, experience, and unique qualifications. There are also potential opportunities for employment during the summer months. - A bachelor's degree and experience in student services programs.
Additional Requirements:
- Strong communication skills, particularly written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to and successful experience working with diverse populations.
- Valid driver's license.
- Must pass a SLED background check.
- Day, night, and weekend work to include rotating duty/call shifts and emergency situations.
- Some overnight travel when assigned.
