Resident Assistant Responsibilities
Leadership
* Serve as leaders within their residential community and the greater UNCSA community.
* Serve as mentors and role models to their residents.
* Refer and encourage students to utilize academic and student support resources on campus.
* Draw on personal experiences and training to assist their peers through the UNCSA experience.
* Maintain professional standards of confidentiality with organizational or personal information.
* Utilize critical thinking when making independent judgements and decisions.
* Exhibit flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances.
* Collaborate with RAs, the College Life team, campus partners, and other student leaders to build community and address students' concerns.
* Educate residents on campus policies and regulations and enforce them within the residential communities.
* Assist residents with resolving concerns or issues related to their residential experience.
* Adhere to rules and stipulations of the Student Code of Conduct and Residential Policies and Community Standards.
Administration
* Check your UNCSA email account daily.
* Employ clear communication skills and utilize multiple means of communication to share information.
* Assist with providing desk coverage.
* Maintain timely communication with professional staff, student staff, and campus partners.
* Attend regularly scheduled Resident Assistant team meetings, supervisor one-on-ones, community meetings, and/or committee meetings to remain informed about campus and residential issues.
* Attend all scheduled Resident Assistant Training sessions and department functions.
* Assist with opening and closing college residential communities each semester.
* Facilitate Community Meetings at times designated by the Residential Education & Housing staff.
* Manage and organize time, work commitments, and personal responsibilities effectively.
* Complete Monthly Community Development Logs (CDLs) to reflect on your RA experience and work within the residential community.
* Complete Room Inventory Reports.
* Conduct Health and Safety inspections of residential spaces.
* Facilitate Roommate Contract Meetings for residents as necessary throughout the academic year.
* Submit maintenance requests to document damages or facility issues in the residential communities.
* Assist with student lockouts as necessary.
* Submit reports as requested.
* Assist with other duties as assigned by a Residential Education and Housing staff member.
Crisis Management
* Participate in the on-call duty rotations (including weekends and some break periods) during your assigned shifts where you respond to resident needs, facilities concerns, and emergencies.
* Respond to emergencies such as fire, floods, weather incidents, campus lockdown, power outages, etc. in accordance with the Resident Assistant Handbook and Resident Assistant Training.
* Serve as a Responsible Employee, reporting all violations of the university policies, state and federal law, and cases of sexual misconduct, sexual assault, or sexual harassment to a supervisor.
* Follow up with residents who are in crisis and/or have been confronted for policy violations when prompted by staff.
* Assist with any fire alarms, fire drills, and fire safety education opportunities as requested by Residential Education and Housing staff.
* Utilize appropriate referral skills for resident concerns and to support student success. ? Submit detailed and factual Incident Reports (IRs) related to residential policies and Code of Conduct infractions, students of concerns, emergencies, etc.
Community Building and Engagement
* Demonstrate a commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all UNCSA students.
* Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance understanding of social responsibility and foster a community that values the unique backgrounds and experiences of all individuals.
* Support the Residential Education and Housing team in promoting a living and learning environment where every resident feels connected and valued.
* Adhere to UNCSA's policy of maintaining a campus free from harassment and discrimination.
* Maintain consistent contact with residents to develop a positive living and learning community.
* Get to know each resident through individual one-on-one meetings (Pickle Chats).
* Create door decorations for each resident at the beginning of each semester.
* Design and maintain monthly community bulletin boards and/or newsletters for residents.
* Organize community building and social activities for residents, both passive and active programs.
* Assist residents with connecting to campus organizations and University events.
* Assist the College Life Office with executing learning experiences for the residential community.
Resident Assistants are subject to specific expectations, which will be outlined in departmental and supervisor expectations, Resident Assistant Contract, Housing and Dining Contract, Residential Community Standards, and the UNCSA College Handbook.
Minimum Job Qualifications
* Must be enrolled as a student at UNCSA. Full-time students preferred.
* Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher during the periods of employment.
* Abide by the policies laid out in the UNCSA Student Handbook.
* Have and maintain good student conduct standing including Title IX. Defined as not having an active sanction of judicial probation or higher as well as having no active sanctions from a case where they were found in violation of College Residential Community Standards or the College Student Handbook.
* Reside in UNCSA housing in the assigned location for the duration of employment.
* Maintain accountability for all assigned keys and One Card at all times.
* Fulfill all position duties and responsibilities as stated in the Resident Assistant Position Description and Resident Assistant Contract.
* Inform supervisor[s] and Director of Residential Education & Housing of any social, community and/or extracurricular activities. Additional time commitments such as significant leadership opportunities and additional employment are secondary to the RA position.
* Receive formal approval from your direct supervisor[s] and Director of Residential Education & Housing before engaging in any additional campus employment, off campus employment, internships, etc.
Time Commitment
Although the Resident Assistant (RA) position cannot easily be translated into hours worked per day or per week due to the unique nature of the responsibilities, the position requires a genuine personal commitment and a firm understanding of the varying demands of the actual time involved. As such, RAs must make an effort to be in their assigned community a minimum of 15 hours per week. During such time, RAs should be completing the following tasks:
* Spend time getting to know your residents.
* Have one-on-one conversations with residents.
* Host social and community building events.
* Address resident and community concerns.
* Collaborate with teammates on developing residential learning experiences.
* Complete administrative tasks (bulletin boards/newsletters, door decorations, etc.)
* Maintaining rotating weekend shifts at the Artist Village front desk
* Serve in a duty rotation with fellow RA's
Additional Positions
RAs are encouraged to participate in campus life and the Winston-Salem community; however, no commitment should interfere with responsibilities of being a successful student/artist or with the duties and responsibilities of the RA position. RAs are required to seek approval from their direct supervisor and Director of Residential Education & Housing before engaging in any additional time commitments outside of the RA role including, but not limited to, campus leadership positions, additional employment, internships, etc. Some requests may not be honored if it is deemed the additional position requires significant time conflicts and/or is a potential conflict of interest with the RAs position. The College Life team in consultation with Human Resources will determine if an additional position is a conflict of interest. Additional opportunities with extensive time commitments outside of art/academic obligations will have a significant impact on an RA's wellbeing and ability to balance responsibilities within the RA role. When conflicts arise between RA responsibilities and non-academic work, RA responsibilities take priority.
Remuneration and Benefits
Financial Benefits
* Stipend: Resident Assistants will receive a $3000 stipend ($1500/semester), divided equally amongst pay periods ($300/month) falling within the dates of employment based on UNCSA's payroll schedule for 10 months. Work hours may vary week to week.
* Housing Assignment: Resident Assistants are provided flat housing rate of $4200. This RA housing rate will be reviewed and potentially adjusted every two years. After the two years, we will consider increasing the RA housing rate based on if the campus housing rate has increased for the previous or upcoming academic year.

* Meal Plan: RAs may choose from the following options: the 175-Meal Plan, the All-Access Meal Plan, or the option to not participate in a meal plan. If opting out of a meal plan, RAs are strongly encouraged to consult with Financial Aid to understand how this decision could potentially impact their financial aid package, as this may vary on a case-by-case basis.
* Parking Permit: Residential Education and Housing owns a limited number of parking spaces near our residential communities. RAs may be eligible to receive a parking permit for a reserved parking spot.
* Note: These amounts are prorated if you are hired after the semester move-in date or vacate the position prior to the end of the Resident Assistant Contract.

The Department of Residential Education & Housing cooperates with the campus at large to create a community environment conducive to personal and professional growth. Residential Education staff are available to serve as peer educators, administrators, resource persons, and counselors. Professional maintenance mechanics provide facilities support and maintain rapport with the students. The Team is dedicated to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive community for both a high school and college student population. We advocate for the enrichment of student artists' experiences by promoting self-awareness, providing healthy social opportunities, identifying resources for success, and presenting educational programs focused on developing lifelong skills. The Residential Education & Housing program at University North Carolina School of the Arts houses approximately 750 high school and college aged students.
Description of Work
Position Overview
Resident Assistants (RAs) are valued members of the College Life team within the department of Residential Education and Housing who live in college residential communities and are trained to provide support for our residents throughout the academic year. Resident Assistants serve as peer educators who engage UNCSA's artist scholars in various aspects of their residential experience including, but not limited to, self-discovery, community development, intellectual engagement, health and wellness, and citizenship. Resident Assistants also serve as positive role models within the community, aid in student support initiatives, encourage personal growth in their peers, and provide learning experiences within our residential communities.
