  • Job Posting Resident Care Aide This is not a State of Michigan position; it is a Michigan School for the Deaf contracted position. DESCRIPTION: Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) is a bilingual school, with a residential component, for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). An American Sign Language (ASL)/English bilingual approach is used to support the acquisition, development, and use of ASL and English. Students are placed at MSD by the IEP process and come from all around the State of Michigan. Some students living outside of Genesee County live residentially in the dorms at MSD Sunday - Thursday. This full-time position will support student needs after school in the dorms working wither second or third shift. The purpose of this position is to be a role model for Deaf youth living in the dorms. This person is to be a member of the team that creates and implements plans to provide a nurturing and successful setting outside the home. This person must be able to encourage the development of self-help skills in the children they serve, help modify behavior through structured plans, and have excellent interpersonal communication skills. BASIC FUNCTION:
    • Ensure youth whereabouts and safety and monitor activities.
    • Interact with youth at mealtimes to provide teaching opportunities for social interactions and manners.
    • Supervise/attend to the personal care needs of youth, including but not limited to hair, skin, and nail care, shaving, diapering, toileting, bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, etc.
    • Address behaviors, including inattention, withdrawal, annoying, disruptive, and aggressive behaviors.
    • Ensure youth have adequate support to study/complete homework
    • Participate in and transport youth to activities on and off MSD campus.
    • As delegated by licensed professional staff, set up and administer medications.
    • Attend to health and medical needs of youth by involving the school nurse or providing basic first aid/CPR, if necessary.
    • Participate in trainings and professional development, such as first aid and CPR, and meetings
    • Provide written reports, including incident reports and injury reports, as needed.
    • Keep records and logs as required by Unit processes and procedures.
    • Other duties as assigned, appropriate to classification. QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of high school or GED.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff using ASL and written English.
    • Chauffeur's license or willingness to obtain a chauffeur's license is preferred
    • Knowledge of basic care techniques and methods.
    • Knowledge of physical, mental, and behavioral characteristics of youth.
    • Ability to establish appropriate relationships and to get along well with youth and other staff.
    • Ability to maintain appropriate attitude and conduct necessary for the welfare of youth.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT: Michigan School for the Deaf is a bilingual, bicultural school operated by the Michigan Department of Education. All students enrolled are Deaf and hard of hearing. The primary mode of communication is American sign language with written communication in English.
